    School Supplies for 2024-2025

In their ongoing commitment to equitable classrooms for all students, the Sunnyvale School District has made a commitment to providing basic student supplies for all classrooms.  After reviewing “Supply Wish Lists” from our ten schools, the District has taken steps to ensure this promise will be fulfilled next school year.  Therefore, we will not be publishing grade level “Supply Wish Lists” for the 2024-2025 school year.  Instead of purchasing classroom supplies, we encourage all families to purchase items your child can use at home to practice their skills and complete any assigned homework or projects.

At Back to School Night, teachers will share with you any special projects or activities they plan to do for the year, and they may have a “specialty items” wishlist they will share for any items that can be donated to the classroom, such as recyclables or other speciality items that are not basic student supplies.

    Last Day of School

Can you believe that we are already in the last week of school!  The last day of school is Thursday, June 6.  All students will be dismissed at 11:20 am.

Our fifth graders will be celebrating promotion beginning at 8:30 am in the multipurpose room.  For all who will be attending a couple of reminders:

    • Please do not bring large signs or inflatable items into the cafeteria.  These often block the view of others who are eager to see their child graduate.  If you do have balloons, you can drop them off in the office during the ceremony and pick them up after.

    • As student names are called, please make sure each child’s name can be heard and celebrated.  We ask that families refrain from using noise makers and sirens in the cafeteria, as these can be uncomfortable and distracting for some of our honorees.

    • Every family will want to get pictures of their child, so be mindful of supporting the

2024-2025 School Year - Calendar Updates

After careful consideration, the Sunnyvale School District has decided to revert to the previous Teacher Learning Day Schedule for all elementary schools.  This means that students will continue to be dismissed at 12:30 on Tuesdays for Teacher Learning Days next year.  I have attached a copy of the updated calendar for you to use in planning vacations and child care for next year.

Next school year will begin on Monday, August 19.  Class placements will be sent to families on August 14 by email.  As in previous years, we do not accept teacher requests for classroom placement, as our teachers work collaboratively to build classrooms based on a variety of educational and social factors.

    Kids Learning After School (KLAS)

Kids Learning After School is an after school program run through the Sunnyvale School District.  The program runs Monday - Thursday from 2:15-6:00 and Fridays from 12:30-6:00.  This program is funded by grants, which means that we must prioritize enrollment of students who meet certain criteria.  Once these students have had a chance to enroll, we can then open enrollment to all families at Fairwood Explorer.  Due to high demand, placements are made based on a lottery system.  Those who do not get an initial placement will be added to the waitlist for possible openings during the school year.

The initial invites to prioritized students has been completed, and we are now accepting applications from any other families who would like to enroll in KLAS.  If you would like to apply, you can pick up an application in the office or email the KLAS Site Lead, Vanessa Melgoza at vanessa.melgozalopez@sesd.org.  She can send a packet home with your child.  If you email Ms. Vanessa, please include your child(ren)’s name(s), grade level(s), and teacher name(s).

This year’s event leads will be Lina Irwin and Monica Aggarwal. Alliance Board Member Jacob Farkas will be serving as the Board Liaison. A BIG THANK YOU to these families for stepping up to help this event happen!

Now it is your turn! They are currently looking for families who would like to host a country booth.  Please check out the presentation on our school website to learn more about International Festival and what it means to host a booth!  You can sign up to host a booth at International Festival Booth Sign Up. We would love to see the diversity of our campus reflected in this year's event, so please consider either hosting a booth or teaming with another family to host a booth!

    Festival Internacional

Emergency Drill - Student Release Practice

Today, our staff and students completed an emergency earthquake drill with a twist!  While we practice one of our evacuation drills (Fire, Earthquake, and Lockdown) throughout the year, this time we added an additional component: student release.  In the event of an actual emergency, students would be evacuated from their classrooms, and we may need to engage our student release protocol for parents to pick up their students from school.  Today, some parent volunteers helped us practice this process, and our team did an amazing job of releasing students smoothly.  We want to thank our staff and the volunteers who helped us practice this important process.

As a note to all families: In the case of an emergency, we would only be able to release your child to someone on your Emergency Contact List. You are asked to update this list annually at the start of the year through InfoSnap.  In addition to their parents, it is good to have a family friend, another family from Fairwood, or a nearby relative on your emergency contact list in case you are unable to pick up your child during an emergency.  Please consider these recommendations the next time you are invited to update the student information in InfoSnap.  You can also add or remove emergency contacts at any time by visiting the Fairwood office and making a request to update your contact information.

    Walk-a-Thon Thank You! / Caminata-maratón ¡Gracias!

We want to thank the Walk-a-Thon committe, the Fairwood Alliance and our family volunteers for a wonderful Walk-a-Thon experience last Friday.  The weather was perfect, and we saw a lot of students having fun together!  These community events are a great time to share in your child's school experiences, and we are so happy to partner with you!  As an extra bonus, this event is a valuable fundraiser that helps support the many school field trips and activities your child enjoys each year.  If your child participated in fundraising for this event, we ask that you collect your child's pledges and submit them to the Fairwood Alliance by March 22.  All pledges are welcome and help support our school, so whether your child raised $5 or $500, we than you for taking the time to support our school.  If you haven't already checked, many employers offer matching donation programs, so you may want to inquire to see if your child's pledges could be doubled!

Today, our students participated in a Quest for Kindness Assembly.  Among the topics they explored, they learned that the key to kindness is having respect for yourself and others.  What is respect?  They gave the following examples:

    • We build relationships to help us connect with others and understand their perspectives.
    • We provide each other with encouragement.
    • We support each other when we are struggling.
    • We have patience for each other and ourselves.
    • We empathize with others and listen to what they have to say.
    • We build a strong community in which everyone is valued.
    • We trust each other to support us through difficult times.

You can remind students of these important traits and recognize them at home when they are demonstrating them.

Measure C - Don’t Forget to Vote on March 5

    Measure C Fact Sheet

On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, all of the voters in the Sunnyvale School District will have an opportunity to vote on Measure C, a $214 million school bond. Measure C will provide funds to renovate older schools, improve instructional technology, and increase campus safety and security at schools in the District. The average yearly cost to property owners in the Sunnyvale School District will be $15 per $100,000 of assessed valuation (not market value).

Measure C funds will be used to continue the renovation and modernization of all district schools, providing students and teachers with comparable classrooms and facilities. The bond will help provide schools with long term capital facility maintenance funds.

     Measure C will:

    • Fix or replace leaky roofs and windows

    •  Improve accessibility for students with disabilities

    • Expand counseling facilities to support the mental health of students

    • Update classrooms, science labs and technology to meet current instructional standards

    • Upgrade and improve school safety and security

    • Modernize Sunnyvale Middle School

Measure C aligns with the Facilities Master Plan, a comprehensive facilities analysis conducted in 2021 with considerable community input. The Facilities Master Plan focuses on coordinating the district’s educational goals with the proposed facility improvements included in Measure C.

Measure C provides for strict accountability as bond funds are spent. The School Board adopted a specific project list when calling this election. In addition, an Independent Citizens Bond Oversight Committee will monitor and review all bond expenditures. This committee of local residents will be tasked with ensuring that all bond funds are spent as planned for the benefit of local students.

None of the money will be used for school administrator or teacher salaries.  All of the money generated by Measure C will pay for school construction projects.

Construction costs cannot be paid for by lottery funds.  State law (Government Code Section 8880.5) forbids the use of lottery funds for school construction.

Voting will take place at Columbia Middle School and Sunnyvale Middle School, or you can find a voting center at https://rovservices.sccgov.org/

Family Literacy Night / Noche de Lectura

Fairwood will be hosting a Family Reading Night on February 29 from 6:30-7:30 pm!  Join us for a puzzling adventure as your family gets “trapped in the school” and has to use their literacy skills and work together to solve puzzles and find a way out!

In order to make this event happen, we are looking for family volunteers to host stations for this event. All materials will be provided, and station hosts will just help families read and understand the directions for their station, giving little clues if the family needs help.

We would also love to sell pizza and drinks for families, and we are looking for volunteers who could pick up pizzas and conduct sales.  You can sign up for one of these roles at the following link:

    Family Literacy Night Volunteers

To ensure you have time to participate with your family, we have broken each volunteer role into 15 minute increments.  If you are willing to serve for more than one session, we would appreciate your support, and you are welcome to sign up for multiple times.

    Become a Trustee in Sunnyvale

The Sunnyvale School District completed the process to transition from at-large to by-trustee area elections in 2022 and Fremont Union High School District is in the process of doing so this Spring. Switching to trustee areas involved dividing the district into five trustee areas of roughly equal population size, based on the most recent Census data. Each trustee is assigned one seat on the Board. Voters within each trustee area will vote only for candidates for the seat on the Board assigned to their trustee area.  This system is intended to provide more direct representation and make it easier and less expensive for people who live in each trustee area to run for a seat on the Board of Trustees. This move is a direct result of the California Voting Rights Act, intended to amplify minority voices in local elections.

Here are some resources and leadership opportunities for people considering representing your neighborhood and running for your local 1Uponuschool board.

The Sunnyvale School District is currently working to build a new six year strategic plan, which we will use to help inform our school plan.  In order to ensure we are selecting goals and priorities that align with the Fairwood community, we would like to encourage you to provide your input using the short survey below:

    English Survey Link

A top priority for the Fairwood team is to ensure student safety.  After school, we do not have any playground supervision available.  Sometimes, kids want to play on the playground after school, but without appropriate supervision, there is a risk that students could get injured and not receive appropriate care.  As a result, we ask that all families exit the campus after school is dismissed.  For students who want an opportunity to play with friends after school, we would encourage you to consider taking your child to Fairwood Park.

Families sometimes inquire about students who are playing after school.  We do have a number of after school programs that run on our campus.  Some of these programs include outside play time with students.  When these programs play outside, they are responsible for providing supervision to their enrolled students.

    Happy New Year, FAIRWOOD!

We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful holiday vacation, and we are looking forward to welcoming our students back!  Here are a few announcements for the week!

    Astronomy Night

Astronomy Night is Thursday, January 11!  The San Jose Astronomical Association will be bringing telescopes to Fairwood for students to use to observe the night sky!  Our astronomers will have telescopes out from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm (depending on the crowd they may close a little early or stay a little later).  In addition, we are hoping to have a few fun activities available in the multi for students to enjoy from 6:00-8:00 pm, but we need your help!  I want to thank the Astronomy Night Team for already signing up for some of our activities, but we will need to have some additional support to keep the fun going for the entire event!  We have four stations available:

    1.  Hot Cocoa Station - In this station, you would sell and pour hot cocoa.  Hot cocoa sales will be $1 each, and it will be cash only.

    2.  Solar System in My Pocket - Students will design a simple model of our solar system that they can fit into their pocket.  You can find a link to the instructions as well as a video at this link.   Volunteers would help students follow the steps for making their own model.

    3.  Paper Cup Planetarium - Students create popular constellations by punching the designs into cups. Volunteers would help students choose their constellation and give instructions on how to make their cup. Here are directions.

    4. Story Station - We will have a selection of books students can listen to or explore about astronomy.  I have asked staff members if they would be interested in being mystery readers for this station, so some spots may be filled based on the availability of staff.

If you would be willing and able to volunteer for one of these stations, you can sign up here: Astronomy Night Volunteers If we do not get additional volunteers, we will need to close the activities early.

Upcoming Shortened Days, Holidays, and Breaks

We have shortened days or days off coming up for students.

    • This Tuesday is a Teacher Learning Day.  All students will be dismissed at 12:30.
    • January 15 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  We honor this civil rights leader during this holiday, and school will be closed.
    • January 16 is a Staff Development Day.  Our teachers and staff will be receiving professional development this day, so there will be not school for students.

If you haven't done so already, please mark your calendars for these upcoming dates.

    2024-2025 School Calendar

The Sunnyvale School District just approved a calendar for the 2024-2025 school year.  You can view the new calendar at this link.  Some notable changes:

    • The start date for students has shifted to a Monday (August 19), rather than the usual Wednesday.
    • School will be in recess the entire week of Thanksgiving.  There will be no school for students this week.
    • Teacher Learning Days will shift from an early release Tuesday in grades K-5 to a late start Wednesday.  This timing aligns with the modified day in the middle school calendar.  Note: Teacher Learning Days are still only once per month in grades K-5, but middle school will continue with a weekly late start on Wednesdays.
    • The September Staff Development Day has been removed from the calendar and is replaced by a Non-Duty Day in March.  This aligns with the Fremont High School District calendar.

As many families begin making plans early for their vacations, we wanted to be sure you had this new calendar early to assist you with your planning!

    Open House

This year, Fairwood is trying something new for Open House!  Since May is always a very busy month, we thought it would be interesting to try hosting our Open House in January!  This also allows an opportunity for prospective families to visit our classrooms and meet current families before the registration window opens.  This year's Open House will be January 31 at 6:00 pm. Be sure to mark your calendars and tell anyone you know who may be interested in enrolling to stop by for a visit.

    Bond Measure C

As you may be aware, 2024 is an election year. There are a number of national, state, and local measures on the ballot. Measure C is on the ballot specifically for Sunnyvale Schools. Measure C is a $214 million school bond to provide funds for the renovation and modernization of the schools in the Sunnyvale School District.

If you are a registered voter in the District, please make sure you either Vote By Mail or go to the polls and vote on March 5. We have fact sheets available about Measure C. We have voter registration cards available if you are not yet registered, or you can register online here, and we are available to answer questions about Measure C.

Please remember to vote on March 5! Thank you.

    Astronomy Night

Our next big Fairwood event will be Astronomy Night.  The San Jose Astronomical Association will be bringing telescopes to Fairwood on the evening of January 11 for some stargazing.  We are hoping for clear skies!

    Holiday Recess

Our last day of school before the Holiday Recess is Thursday, December 21.  We will be on vacation and school will be closed from Friday, December 22 through Sunday, January 7.  Students will return to school on Monday, December 8.

    Volunteer Driving Documents

If you have not submitted your driving documents to drive on a school field trip, it's not too late!  Unfortunately, the cost of buses is prohibitive, so we try to organize drivers for many of our field trips.  If classrooms do not get enough drivers, they may have to reduce the number of field trips for the year.  We know that some of you have experienced challenges uploading documents to Better Impact.  If you have had any trouble, you can also submit a hard copy to the classroom teacher, who will pass it on to the Field Trip Coordinator.  As a reminder, you are required to provide a copy of a valid Driver's License as well as proof of a minimum coverage of $100,000 liability insurance.

Veteran's Day Holiday

A reminder that there will be no school on Friday, November 10 in honor of Veterans Day.  We wish to thank all of our families who are have been members of the military for their service to our country!

    Picture Make-Ups

Monday, November 13 is make-up picture day at Fairwood.  If your child missed the first picture day or you would like your child to retake pictures, please go to mylifetouch.com.  You can use code EVTVMT39T to order your pictures.  If your child is going to take retakes, you will need to send the original photos back with your child in order to take the retakes.  Only students who were absent during our first picture day or student who have placed an order will go to take pictures on this day.

    School Snacks

Students learn best when they are fueled with good nutrition.  Recently, we have noticed that some of the snack choices students are bringing to school may not be the best options to fuel their bodies.  When providing snack options for your children, please consider sending healthy snacks.  Nutritious food should have:

    • Less than 35 percent of its total calories from fat

    • Less than 10 percent of its calories are from saturated fat

    • Less than 35 percent of its total weight is composed of sugar (unless it is a fruit and vegetable)

    Nutritious drinks include:

    • Drinking water

    • Milk including chocolate milk, soy milk, rice milk, and other similar dairy or nondairy milk

    • Electrolyte beverages that contain 42 grams or less of added sweetener per 20 ounce serving

    • A 100 percent fruit juice, or fruit based drink that is composed of 50 percent or more fruit juice and that has no added sweeteners

    Driving Safety

We have had concerns raised from members of the community surrounding our campus about driving safety.  Please remember to drive safely when entering and exiting the school campus by adhering to these guidelines:

    • Maximum speed in a school zone is 25 mph, but when you are in the drop off area, we recommend speeds of 10 mph.
    • Cars often park close to the entrances and exits of our driveway, making visibility difficult.  Slowly exit from the drop off areas to make sure there is no oncoming traffic.
    • If you are walking with your student, please stay on the sidewalks or in crosswalks at all times.  Sometimes, this may mean taking a slightly longer route, but it is worth your child's safety.
    • Please only park in the designated parking spaces, and do not leave a vehicle unattended in the drop off/pick up zones.

    Thank you for your cooperation!

    Holiday Craft Fair

The Fairwood Holiday Craft Fair will take place on Saturday, November 18 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.  We will have many vendors available for you to support, and many of the vendors will be current or former Fairwood Families!  Stop on by to pick up some great items for your holiday shopping or to enter into the raffles!

    Thanksgiving Break

A reminder that Fairwood will be closed for the Thanksgiving Break from Wednesday, November 22 to Sunday, November 26.  We hope you will have the opportunity to enjoy time with family and friends during this school break.

    School Site Council - Correction

I made an error in the announcement of our returning School Site Council representatives.  Monica Aggarwal has completed her two year representation term, and she will be stepping down from the School Site Council, as she is now our After School Activities Lead.  Nikhita Dulluri will be completing her second term as a School Site Council Representative.  So, our official line-up is:

    Melanie Guiang

    Nikhita Dulluri

    Ambrosia Studley

    Chris Farina

    Garick Chan

    Alternate: Jessica Mauch

I apologize for my error, and I am very pleased to have such a great range of representation for Fairwood.

    Fairwood Fall Fun Fest

As a Family Participation School, Fairwood asks that every family volunteer at 1 event each month to support exciting and interactive community events.  Our event for October is the Fairwood Fall Fun Fest, though we had to schedule it on November 2 due to some scheduling conflicts.  I want to thank all of the families who have already signed up to make this event amazing.

Unfortunately, we still have a number of open volunteer spots, and we are worried we may have to cancel some of the booths if we don’t get more volunteers.  Volunteer times are only 30 minutes, leaving you with plenty of time to explore the Fall Fun Fest with your family.  Volunteers are still needed for:

    • Ticket Booth

    • Snack Booth

    • The Following Class Game Booths

      • Mrs. Lopez’s Pumpkin Pop Ring Toss

      • Ms. Morales’s Pick a Lollipop

      • Mrs. Salvador’s Ladder Ball Toss

      • Ms. Hyginus’s Relay Tick Tac Toe

      • Ms. Byrne’s Apple Picking

      • Ms. Hodson’s Bean Bag Toss

      • Ms. Cuneo/Mr. Callejas’s Hula Hoop Toss

      • Ms. Levine’s Pumpkin Race or Quidditch Toss

All other classroom booths have at least one person for each time slot, but it is always nice to have a partner!  A big shout out to Mr. Emmett’s class!  They have all volunteer slots filled!

    Free Fingerprinting!

The Sunnyvale School District sponsored three opportunities for families to get free TB tests and Fingerprinting, and we are very excited that most of those who wanted an appointment were able to get one.  We know that some of you may still need to get fingerprinting, but you weren’t able to make it to one of these events.  The Fairwood Alliance has brought back their “fingerprinting coupons” to allow any family member who wishes to get free fingerprinting to do so.  To participate, you will need to complete the Sunnyvale School District Fingerprinting from.  You will also need to get a “Free Fingerprinting Coupon” from the Fairwood office.  Once you have these two items, you can go to the location listed on the coupon to get your free fingerprinting.

Please note: If you completed fingerprinting without the Sunnyvale form, your fingerprint information is not visible to the Sunnyvale School District.  For example, if you were fingerprinted through the City of Sunnyvale, Fremont Unified High School District, your child’s baseball team, or any other organization, we are not able to access your fingerprints.  The above form directs the Department of Justice to share your results with the Sunnyvale School District.  Therefore, it is required that you use the above request form when completing your fingerprinting.

Thank you to the Fairwood Alliance for continuing to support volunteers at Fairwood!

    Driving Documents for Volunteers

Once you have registered in Better Impact, there is an additional step to complete to become an approved driver. You must upload your driving documents.  To do this:

Log in to your Better Impact Account.

    Under Profile, choose Additional Info

You may have to select Fairwood as a next step, if you are registered to volunteer at multiple schools.

You should then be taken to a page that will allow you to upload your documents.  A quick reminder:

The upload of your liability insurance documents must include the name of the person insured, the amount of coverage (minimum $100,000 liability), and have valid dates of coverage.  We have had several volunteers upload their insurance card, which does not typically include all of this information.

    End of Trimester 1

Trimester 1 ends on November 9.  Teachers are currently assessing student progress to help inform report cards, which will be sent home on November 13.  Please be sure your child is attending school daily and arriving at school on time.  Continuous absences or tardies can negatively impact a child’s development and progress.  We look forward to sharing our students progress with families at the end of the trimester!

    School Site Council Election Results

A big thank you to all of the families who participated in our School Site Council election.  Your new 2023-2025 representatives are:

    Ambrosia Studley

    Chris Farina

    Garick Chan

They will be joining Monica Aggarwal and Melanie Guiang, who are continuing representatives from last year.  Jessica Bronco will be serving as an alternative, should one of these representatives not be able to fulfill their role due to unforeseen circumstances.

Our sincerest appreciation to these community members for their contributions.  Our first School Site Council meeting will be on October 26 at 6:00 pm on Zoom.  All members of the public are welcome to attend.  The other meeting dates this school year are December 7, March 7, and May 16.

    English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)

I want to thank Camilla Santos for volunteering to fill one of our available ELAC spaces to represent the families of English Learners.  Our ELAC meetings traditionally take place in conjunction with School Site Council, so our first meeting will be October 26 at 6:00 pm on Zoom.  The other meeting dates this school year are December 7, March 7, and May 16.

We are still looking for 3 additional ELAC representatives.  If your child is an English Learner or was designated as an English Learner in the past, your insights and guidance can help us create better programs and supports for our students.  Please reach out to Rachelle Romander if you are interested.

In addition to our site ELAC team, the District hosts a District ELAC team with a representative from every school.  At this time, Fairwood does not have a representative.  If you would be interested in serving on the District ELAC team, please let Rachelle Romander know.  The meeting dates for the District ELAC team are: October 24, December 20, March 27, and June 5.  All meetings are at 6:30 pm in the District Office Board Room.

Our first Dine Out fundraiser takes place next week at Chipotle!  Treat your family to a Chipotle dinner on October 24 between 4 pm and 8 pm, and 33% of your order price will be donated to Fairwood.  All orders must be made through the location at 324 W EL CAMINO REAL # B-3, SUNNYVALE, CA, 94087.  If you are placing an online order, please enter code LW676WV when you check out. Online orders must be made between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm for pickup between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm to qualify for the fundraiser.  You can also show a copy of the fundraising flier at the counter, which will be posted to Konstella and Class Dojo.

    Fall Fun Fest

Our Fairwood Fall Fun Fest is coming soon!  On November 2, the Fairwood playground will be filled with fun games and activities for students to enjoy!  All students will get a few free tickets so they can participate in the festivities.  Additional tickets will be available for purchase, as well as snacks and drinks.  I want to extend my appreciation for all of the Fairwood families who have signed up to help with this event.  We couldn’t do it without you!  Also, a big shout out to Anna Thomas and Narissa Sousa for being the leads for this event!  Even more details to come in our next Falcon Flier!

    Fairwood Costume Parade

Our annual costume parade will take place on October 31 at 8:00 am.  Students may wear a costume to school to participate in the parade.  Music will be played as grade levels take turns parading the blacktop to show their school spirit!  In order to make this a fun event for everyone, we have a few guidelines for costumes:

    1.  No weapons of any kind may be brought to school.  This includes “prop” weapons that are soft.  If they are brought to school, they will be held by the classroom teacher until the end of the day.

    2.  Costumes should be appropriate for elementary school children, including our youngest students.  Students and parents should not wear overly gory (bloody), scary, or sexy costumes to school.

    3.  After our parade, which usually finishes around 8:30, students will be returning to class for a full day of school.  With this in mind, please do not send students with extensive face painting, as it is difficult to remove and becomes uncomfortable as the day progresses.

    4.  We recommend that students bring a change of clothing for after the parade.  Many costumes are not comfortable for full day wear, and they can get damaged during active play.  With this in mind, students should be able to independently change out of their costumes.  If the costume is difficult for your child to put on or take off independently, it might not be the best option for a school costume parade.

    5.  Families are welcome to observe the costume parade.  We ask that families be mindful of students and provide them with open pathways and the best viewing.  For this reason, parents are asked to stand behind their child’s classroom.  Families are also welcome to dress up, but we ask that they also follow our guidelines for appropriate costumes.

    6.  We understand that some families do not want their child to participate in the costume parade.  We still want all of our students to feel welcome to come to school on October 31.  If you would like your child to engage in an alternative activity from the costume parade, please notify Lisa Walker by sending an email to lisa.walker@sesd.org or calling 408-523-4870.  Be sure to include the name of your child and the name of your child’s teacher.  An alternative activity will be provided in the multi.  If you are willing to help supervise the students in the multi, please let Lisa Walker know and she will add you to the list.

    Fairwood TK Program

The Sunnyvale School District is exploring a possibility of opening a TK program at Fairwood Explorer beginning in the 2024-2025 school year.  This long awaited addition would allow Fairwood Explorer to offer a comprehensive elementary school program for our community.  The decision to open a program at Fairwood will depend on the level of interest and enrollment next year.  As you speak with families in the community, we encourage you to spread the word so we can open this program for our community!

    Fairwood Explorer School Tours

Do you know a family who might want to enroll at Fairwood next school year? Fairwood Explorer hosts school tours once a month to allow an opportunity for prospective families to learn more about the school and community. During school tours, participants will receive information about the following topics:  general information about the school, a brief overview curriculum and instruction, support services offered, and the role of the Fairwood Alliance.  Following this informational session, we will have a brief visit to classrooms.

    Classroom Volunteering Begins!
October is the start of Classroom Volunteering!  During conference week, your child’s teacher likely discussed classroom volunteering opportunities, and we hope you have found an opportunity that will work for you!  To support families in volunteering, we have been developing a series of trainings to help you learn more about each of the volunteer opportunities.  Look for these videos to be rolled out this week!

If you haven’t registered to volunteer this year, you can do so at Better Impact.  As a reminder, there are three types of volunteering at Fairwood that require different types of documentation:

Volunteer Fair #3 - Free TB tests and Fingerprinting
Fairwood will be hosting a third Volunteer Fair this Thursday, October 5.  You can get a free TB test or free Fingerprinting at this event!

    • If you need a TB test only, these are being provided on a walk-in basis, and no appointment is needed.  However, you will need to create an account to participate. (See below)
    • If you need fingerprinting, you will need to make an appointment, as we can only process about 30 people during each session.
      • Appointments are available from 2:00 to 5:30.
      • Please call or stop by the Fairwood Office to schedule your appointment - 408-523-4870.
      • Please complete the Request for Livescan  form ahead of your appointment and bring it with you to make your appointment go quickly.
      • If you are unable to print a copy of the Livescan form, you can also pick one up in the office.

Once you have completed your fingerprinting and/or TB tests, don't forget you will still need to create your Better Impact account and register as a school volunteer. Approvals for each step can take between 2-4 weeks.  Please be sure to submit your application early to ensure you are cleared before your child’s field trip or upcoming classroom activity.

Please Note: You will need to upload your TB test result when you register. If you get your test through Primary Health, your results will be sent to you through the Primary Health portal.  Fingerprinting results are sent directly to our District's confidential secretary, and do not need to be uploaded by the volunteer.

    School Site Council Ballot

We have four wonderful candidates to represent families on School Site Council this year. Three of these candidates will represent our Fairwood Families as we reflect on our school's progress this year, and we write our goals for next year.

Please use this link to vote for three representatives.

    English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)
To better represent and support all members of the Fairwood community, it is important to have a variety of family input on our school programs.  In coordination with our School Site Council, the English Learner Advisory Committee provides an opportunity for the families of English Learners to review our school achievement plan and school safety plan and provide input on these plans from the perspective of English Learners.  At this time, we do not have any family representatives for our English Learner Advisory Committee.  We would like to have at least four family representatives to support building school programs that represent the needs of all students.  The ELAC team meets 4 times per year from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on Zoom, and your participation in ELAC will count for your full Community Volunteer commitment for the year, due to the importance of this role.  If you are the parent of an English Learner, and you would be interested in being a representative, please reach out to Rachelle Romander by October 6.

    Panorama Survey
The Panorama Family Survey is sent to every parent or guardian at Fairwood to get your input on how we can better serve our students.  The survey window has been open for a week, and we only have a 16% response rate.  We know that life is always busy, but we would love to have every family voice heard.  As an extra incentive, every student who has at least one family member complete the survey will receive a free otter pop!  Please take a few moments to complete your survey today!  In order for your child to receive their free otter pop, we encourage you to use the link provided in the email last week from Panorama.  If you can’t find that email, you can use the following link: https://surveys.panoramaed.com/sunnyvale/login  Your unique access code is your personal email address (the one you used during registration).  Questions or trouble logging in?  Call or come by the Fairwood office for support!

    Fairwood Garden
The Fairwood Gardening Team is gearing up for a great year!  If you love gardening or just want to learn more about urban gardening, you can support our program in many ways:

    • Become your classroom’s Garden Volunteer - You will help lead small groups of students in a short garden lesson each week
    • Volunteer to support the garden during recess or lunch as part of your community volunteer hours
    • Volunteer to support the garden during Garden Days - The Garden Team would love your support with prepping and maintaining our garden on Teacher Learning Days and select Saturdays throughout the year.

Interested in learning more?  Reach out to Ambrosia Studley, our garden lead, and she will be happy to share how you can get involved!

    Cafeteria Tastings
To encourage students to eat a wide range of a local produce is highlighted every other month, and students are allowed to taste the produce while they wait in line for their lunch.  Fairwood students will have their tastings on October 19, December 21, February 29, and April 25.

    Walk and Roll to School

Each October, we like to remind families of the many benefits of walking or rolling to school.  At Fairwood we have many families who come to school for further away,  You can still take advantage of many of these benefits by parking away from the school and walking or rolling to campus.  Read on to learn about the many benefits below.

    Why Walk, Bike or Roll?
It’s fun! Remember the thrill of riding a bike for the first time or walking or rolling to school on the first day? There’s a feeling of joy and independence—a sense of adventure—that doesn’t fade. Of course, there are many other benefits to walking, biking or rolling to school, too.

    Healthier Habits
Active trips to school enable children to incorporate the regular physical activity they need each day while also forming healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Regular physical activity helps children build strong bones, muscles and joints, and it decreases the risk of obesity. In contrast, insufficient physical activity can contribute to chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and stroke.

    Cleaner Environment
When families decide to lace up their sneakers or strap on their helmets to get to school instead of riding in a car, they help reduce the amount of air pollutants emitted by automobiles. Vehicles emit a variety of air pollutants, resulting in increases in ground-level ozone, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter such as particles of dust, soot, smoke, dirt and liquid droplets.

    Promoting Safety
Children and adults need to learn safe walking, biking and rolling skills.
Teach children to cross streets at marked crossings and to always look left-right-left.

Drivers need to watch for others using the road.
Slow traffic in neighborhoods and near schools ensures safe routes.

    Less Traffic Congestion
Reducing the number of private vehicles commuting to school can reduce morning traffic around the school. Less traffic congestion also improves conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists, creating a positive cycle—as the community sees more people walking and rolling, more people feel comfortable walking and rolling.

    Stronger Sense of Community
The common goal of improving conditions for walking and bicycling brings families, neighbors, school officials and community leaders together. The sense of community also builds as children and parents develop walking and rolling buddies and chat with neighbors on the sidewalk or path.

    Safer Streets
Communities with higher rates of walking and rolling tend to have lower crash rates for all travel modes. One reason may be that motorists drive more cautiously when they expect to encounter walkers and rollers. More walkers and rollers can also improve personal security by providing more “eyes on the street.”
    Lower Costs

    Save Money
Families save on gas, communities spend less on building and maintaining roads and school districts spend less on busing. In fact, one school district calculated $237,000 in annual savings.

    Family Connections
Walking or rolling to school together provides opportunities for parents and children to talk and connect with each other.

    Fairwood Alliance Funding Drive
The Fairwood Alliance is conducting their annual funding drive to raise funds for field trips and classroom activities this school year.  Through your donations, we are able to offer our students a wide variety of amazing experiences and opportunities for learning.

The Fairwood Alliance respects your time, and they have decided that rather than having your family sell wrapping paper, candy bars, or other items, they are committed to two large fundraisers to support all of our wonderful programs - this direct appeal and our Walk-a-Thon.  As the Alliance creates its budget for the year, they are hoping to raise $50,000 through the Direct Appeal.  Every dollar you donate will go straight to Fairwood programs and events for your student, so every dollar counts!  As you consider your donation, also investigate whether your employer offers a “Matching Donation” program.  Many companies in the area offer matching donations, and it can double your donation power!  Here is a small list of companies in the Bay Area that have had matching donation programs in the past, and may continue to have programs.  Even if your company is not on this list, they may still have a Matching Donation program.  Just check with your company’s HR department to find out.

You can donate, using the following link or by scanning the QR code below.

The Fairwood Back to School Picnic was a blast.  Thank you to all who came out to make it a special event.  An extra big thank you to the Fairwood Alliance for sponsoring this event!

    Parent Teacher Conference Week

A reminder that this week is Parent Teacher Conference Week.  All students are dismissed at 11:20 this week. We hope you enjoy the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher and set goals for the year.

    Full Day Kindergarten

A reminder to Kindergarten parents that kindergarten starts FULL DAY next week.  Kindergarten students will be dismissed at 2:10 Monday through Thursday and 12:30 on Friday beginning October 2.

    Panorama Survey

All families are kindly asked to complete the Fairwood Panorama Survey!  This survey allows families an opportunity to share their thoughts about our school, the services we provide, and the goals we have set for our students.  Your input is invaluable in supporting our decisions throughout the school year.  The survey will only take a few moments to complete.

To complete the survey, please check the email address you have on file.  Around 8:00 am on Monday, September 25, you should have received an email from the Sunnyvale School District titled “Sunnyvale School District (CA) Request for Feedback.  When you open this email, you will have a survey link you can use to complete our family survey.  We will be offering a free otter pop to every student whose family completes the survey before October 6.  If you did not receive this email, please check your SPAM folder.  If you still cannot find it, you can come by the survey table between 11:30-12:40 this week, or go to the office any time and ask to take the survey.  We will be happy to assist you.  Thank you so much for providing your input!

    Noon Aide Position Available

Fairwood Explorer has a 1 hour Noon Aide position available.  This position would be from 11:20 to 12:20 daily.  If you are interested, please see Lisa Walker in the office.

    Independent Study

Consistent attendance at school is one of the cornerstones for student success.  When students do not attend school, they miss valuable instructional minutes.  Extended absences could result in students missing entire units of instruction.  Despite best efforts, during the course of the school year, there are times when family circumstances result in a need to have your child out of school, such as a family emergency.  The state of California allows students to participate in a short term Independent Study in these situations.  Short term Independent Study is only available for absences between 5 to 10 days.  Here are the details on how to apply for and complete a short term Independent Study:

    • Request an independent study by emailing Rachelle Romander or Shana Riehl with the reason for absence and the dates of the absence at least two weeks prior to the start of the absence.

    • If the absence qualifies for Independent Study, you will be given directions to complete the Independent Study contract.

    • On the last school day before the absence begins, the classroom teacher will provide the student with a set of work to complete during the absence.

    • On the school day after the contract ends, the student must return all of the assigned work to the classroom teacher to complete the Independent Study.

It is important to know that if work is not submitted on the first school day after the dates of the contract, the contract will be void - no matter the reason for the delay.

    Fairwood Events Calendar

The Fairwood Alliance has planned a wide range of events for the community this year.  You can view our tentative schedule at the link below.  Please add these events to your calendars and consider the ways in which you can volunteer to support these events.  All events are tentative, pending volunteers to make them happen.  If you have not done so already, we would also encourage you to complete your Community Volunteer Form and return it to your child's teacher to support us in planning for these events.

    Fairwood Events Calendar

    Fairwood Fall Fun Fest

The Fairwood Alliance has recruited two parent volunteers, Anna Thomas and Narissa Sousa, to chair the Fairwood Fall Fun Fest this year!  This is a wonderful community event in which students will have the opportunity to play games and participate in a wide range of activities with their families.  The Fairwood Fall Fun Fest has been scheduled for November 2 from 2:15-4:30 (set up prior to 2:00 and clean up from 4:30-5:00).  The event organizers are hoping to have volunteers lead a game at this event.  Here is some additional information to support you in deciding to volunteer for this fun event!

School Site Council (SSC) and English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)

We are currently recruiting families to serve on our School Site Council (SSC) and English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)!  Both of these positions can count for your full Community Volunteer commitment. They meet together 4 times per year from 6:00-7:00 on a Thursday evening.

We have two openings on SSC and four openings for ELAC.  Here is a little more information about each of these.

    School Site Council

The School Site Council approves and evaluates the School Plan for Student Achievement (school goals) and the School Safety Plan.  As a team, we evaluate our goals for the year and track our progress toward meeting these goals.

    English Learner Advisory Committee

The English Learner Advisory Committee works with the School Site Council to set and track goals for our school.  ELAC focuses on the progress of English Learners, and the members of this team should have a student who is an English Learner or a reclassified English Learner.

If you would be interested in serving as a representative for one of these groups, please reach out to Rachelle Romander at rachelle.romander@sesd.org

Remember, you can have your full community volunteer commitment fulfilled by serving on one of these committees.

    Parent Teacher Conferences

September 25-29 is Parent Teacher Conference week in Sunnyvale.  All parents are asked to participate in a short Parent Teacher Conference with their child's teacher to learn about their child's current academic, social, and emotional development and set goals for the school year.  You should have already heard from your child's teacher about your child's conference time.  If you haven't schedule a time yet, please reach out to your child's teacher to schedule a conference time.  A reminder that all students are dismissed at 11:20 during this week, and supervision will not be provided unless your child is enrolled in KLAS or CYW.

    Panorama Survey

Each year, the Sunnyvale School District offers two opportunities for parents to provide input on our school programs.  Though there were some glitches at the end of last year, we have been told we are ready to launch our survey the week of September 25.  We will have a booth open during Parent Teacher Conference week for those who would like to complete the survey at Fairwood.  You will also receive information for completing the survey at home.  We hope to get feedback from all the families in our community this year!

The Fairwood Back to School Picnic was a blast.  Thank you to all who came out to make it a special event.  An extra big thank you to the Fairwood Alliance for sponsoring this event!

    Community Volunteering

During the week of Back to School Night, you should have received a Community Volunteer Preference form.  As a reminder, each family is expected to volunteer for the equivalent of one hour per month.  Some families volunteer 10 hours toward one large event (like Walk-a-Thon), while others volunteer shorter amounts of time toward multiple events.

To make sure we can host all of our planned events, the volunteer preference form allows us to collect each community member's preferences for their community volunteering role this year.  We can then make volunteer teams, which makes each event easier because teamwork makes the dream work!

For those who have already returned their Community Volunteer Forms, THANK YOU!  For those of you who haven't had a chance to return it, you can download it here, fill it out, and return it to your child's teacher.

    First Teacher Learning Day

Our first Teacher Learning Day of the year will take place on Tuesday, September 12.  First through Fifth grade students will be excused  from school at 12:30 so our teachers can participate in professional development.  This month, our teachers will be completing the second part of our annual Run, Hide, Defend training, which supports the staff in knowing how to respond to an immediate danger on campus.

    Volunteer Applications Update

We know that many of you have already submitted your volunteer applications.  As the District has launched its new system, we have a few updates.

When you submit your application, you will have to submit the minimum documents to volunteer at Fairwood: your application and your TB test results/risk assessment.  Once your application has been submitted, you will be able to go into your account and upload your driving documentation so that you can drive on a field trip.  To do this, click on "Profile" in the right corner after you have logged into your Better Impact account.  Choose "Additional Info."  You will be able to upload your driving documents on this page and submit.  Your documents will be approved by our team.  This process can take up to two weeks, so we suggest uploading documents as early as possible.

Many of you have asked about the next Volunteer Fair, where you can get fingerprinting or TB tests for free.  We are still waiting to confirm a date for September.  Stay tuned!

    Fairwood Events Schedule

The Fairwood Alliance and Fairwood Explorer are partnering to provide a wide range of fun activities for families this year.  WE hope that our community volunteering will support this wide range of activities, and all of these events will be able to happen!  You can view our schedule of events below.

    Fairwood Events Calendar

Our next event is our final Fairwood 101.  It will take place on Tuesday, September 12 at 12:30.  Supervision will be provided for students whose parents are attending the presentation.

    Holiday Calendar Correction

In our initial Fairwood Falcon Flier, we included a calendar.  Unfortunately, one of the dates was incorrect.  The Holiday break goes from December 22 through January 7.  School resumes on January 8.

    Sunnyvale School District Preschool Program

Did you know our District has a free half-day preschool program for income-eligible families? Our program provides a wonderful start to your child's educational journey and helps them develop social-emotional, language, and pre-academic skills. Air Quality Guidelines

With heavy smoke days in the past week, we wanted to provide you with our District's Poor Air Quality Response for schools.  Based on guidelines from the County Office of Education, our District uses the AirNow.gov website to monitor air quality on potential poor air quality days.  Based on the county recommendations, we will move to an indoor lunch when the air quality is in the "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" range.  If air quality hits the "Unhealthy" range, we will move as many activities as possible to indoors.  If the air quality worsens beyond Unhealthy, the District will take county guidance regarding next steps.

    September is Attendance Awareness Month!

As we start the new school year, please remember that families are essential partners in promoting good attendance because you have the bottom-line responsibility for making sure your children get to school every day. Just as you focus on how your children are performing academically, you have a responsibility to set expectations for good attendance and to monitor your children’s absences, so that missed days don’t add up to academic trouble.

We realize that COVID 19 and other communicable diseases can add additional challenges, but through good communication and our work together we can be sure students are present when they are feeling well. When they must stay home, we know you will be our partner.  We want to ensure students continue to complete school work, read daily, and have opportunities to use their communication skills at home. Below are some resources to support you in setting routines and having discussions with your child about the importance of good attendance.

    Volunteer Registration Fair

To support the registration of family volunteers in the District, Fairwood Explorer will be hosting Volunteer Registration Fair during Back-to-School Night.  The Volunteer Fair will be open from 4:00-8:00.  During this event, the Sunnyvale School District and BayPLS will be partnering to offer FREE fingerprinting and FREE TB tests for family volunteers.  As a reminder, all adults need to have a valid (within the past 4 years) TB Test on file in order to volunteer at Fairwood Explorer.  In addition, those who want to chaperone on a field trip must also be fingerprinted.  These services will be provided in Room 1 at Fairwood.

For those who want to get fingerprinted, please complete the consent form below and be sure to bring a valid ID (see list of possible ID options below).

    Frequently Asked Questions - Volunteering

Do I have to complete the TB skin test, or are there other options?  Volunteers may choose to either have a TB risk assessment, a TB skin test, or a blood test done for the required clearance.  At our volunteer event, they will be administering blood tests, since they do not require the patient to return to have results read.

Do I need to get a new TB test every school year?  Your TB Test or TB Risk Assessment is valid for 4 years.  If your TB test is fewer than four years old, you do not need a new one, unless your results will expire during the current academic year.

Do I need to get fingerprinted every year?  Once you have completed fingerprinting through the Sunnyvale School District, you do not need to have it completed again for your entire time in the Sunnyvale School District.  Fingerprinting is completed once.

Can I use fingerprinting from another organization?  Unfortunately, you cannot.  Your fingerprinting must be linked to the Sunnyvale School District in order for us to receive your report.

I completed fingerprinting using one of the fingerprinting coupons provided in the past.  Should I get fingerprinted again?  No.  Your fingerprints are already on file, and you do not need to do them again.

I am concerned about confidentiality.  Do you keep a record of my fingerprints or TB Test Results?  We do not keep individual record reports on file.  The only information we keep on file is the date in which your fingerprints cleared and the expiration date of your TB Test documentation.

I have my fingerprinting and my TB Test Results.  What happens next?  We will be sharing a Volunteer Registration link with families in the coming weeks.  Once you have your TB Test Results, you will be able to use this link to complete your Volunteer Registration Packet.  We have changed to a new registration system this year.  If you used the old Permission Click link, you will need to resubmit when the new link is provided.

    Kindergarten Playground

Some of you may have noticed that our kindergarten playground is currently under construction.  Unfortunately, the materials for this playground were delayed.  We just received an update from the contractor.  They hope to have the playground completed by September 11.

Until then, our kindergarteners will be joining our first through third grade students on the primary playground during recess.  Once the kindergarten playground is complete, we will transition them back to the kinder playground during morning recess for the remainder of the school year.

    Household Income Form

We want to thank everyone who has attempted to complete the Household Income Form.  Many of you reached out regarding the missing Category 1 and Category 2 Income Tables, and we apologized that these had not been included in the original forms we sent out.  We have recently received the following digital forms, which may be easier for many families:  Alternative Household Income Form

If you would prefer to complete the paper copy, you can find the Category 1 and 2 information on the pictures below.
