  • Join the garden committee for a Saturday Garden Work Day! We will finish clearing weeds, and prepare any remaining beds for planting. Supplies provided, but if you have a pair of favorite gloves bring those, and if you have a battery operated weed whacker, please bring it! The more weed whackers the better, the native plant garden really needs some help. Bring sun hat, sunscreen, reusable sunscreen. Eat lunch before, or bring a picnic to enjoy in the garden. Children welcome with supervising adult.

Car Seats and Booster Seats for Field Trips

One of the amazing advantages for students attending Fairwood is the high number of field trips our studnets take annually.  To support these field trips, we frequently use private vehicles.  When using private vehicles, we are required to follow all safety laws, including regulations for car seats and booster seats.  According to the California Highway Patrol, "​Children under the age of 8 must be secured in a car seat or booster seat in the back seat."  If your child is 8 years old, they go on to recommend that "Children at this stage are not yet ready for adult safety belts and should use belt-positioning booster seats until they are at least 4’9...". Because we are not able to measure students prior to each field trip, we ask that students through second grade (the grade when most students turn 8) continue to use a booster seat for any private car field trip.  If you have a booster seat you can send to school on field trip days, please do so.  We do have a limited number of donated booster seats available to loan to students.  Please note: If your child refuses to use a booster seat, we will have to make alternative arrangements, and they will not be able to attend the field trip.  In the end, it is the responsibility of each parent to ensure they have checked the legal requirements for safe travel in a private vehicle, and they should always provide an appropriate seat for private vehicle field trips.

We are always looking to expand our collection of spare booster seats.  If you have a spare booster seat that is in good condition, you can donate it to Fairwood by dropping it off in the office.

Math Olympiad

On May 3, students who signed up to participate in the first Fairwood Math Olympiad will be participating in their end-of-session competition.  Thank you to Samiullah Mohammed,
Henry Huynh, and Sanjay Kumar for volunteering to serve as judges for this event.  We are still in search of one additional judge.  If you would are willing to support our Fairwood students as a Math Olympiad judge, please email rachelle.romander@sesd.org to express your interest.

Sunnyvale Education Foundation Showcase
This year’s SEF Showcase will feature performances, artwork, projects, student and teacher testimonials and more from students in Sunnyvale schools that SEF's programs have engaged, inspired, encouraged, and empowered. Our students are proud of what they have accomplished and we'd love to share their joy and achievements with you.  The showcase will take place on May 6 from 5:30-7:30 pm.

Our Kids Our Community
Please join Sunnyvale Community Services (SCS) for our annual fundraiser "Our Kids Our Community" on Thursday, May 15th from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. This event will feature an exciting performance from kids at Sunnyvale School District, Auction, Fund-a-Need (paddle raise), VIP Sponsorship Reception with our board, dinner, libations and much more. Join our community of philanthropists, corporate supporters, non-profit partners, volunteers, and community leaders for an event in support of our mission to prevent hunger and homelessness in our local community.  

Your support will fund year-round safety-net services for over 11,300 underserved children and their families in the Sunnyvale, North County, and Alviso areas. SCS provides food, financial assistance, case management, back to school supplies, and resources for unhoused families. 

Together, let's celebrate the power of community, compassion, and collaboration as we work towards a brighter, more hopeful future for our children and their families. Your support truly makes a difference in the lives of those in need.

Spring Break

April 14-18 is Spring Break for the Sunnyvale School District, and school will be closed.  We hope you enjoy this time with your students and get out to try something new!  We look forward to welcoming students back to campus on April 21.

Fairwood Walk-a-Thon

A big thank you to the Fairwood Walk-a-Thon Committee for a wonderful event!  I heard a lot of great feedback from students and families who said they had a great time!  A big thank you to all who volunteered for this event.  We appreciate you making something wonderful happen for our students.

5th Grade Growth Development, and Sexual Health Curriculum - Caregiver Information Night

Our 5th graders will be receiving Growth, Development and Sexual Health instruction between May 12 and June 11th.  While our 5th graders at a science camp, the District will be hosting an informational session about this curriculum.  All 5th grade families are invited to preview the materials and/or attend the informational presentation on the curriculum prior to the start of instruction.  Here are the details for the two opportunities to preview the curriculum:

Sunnyvale School District Family Literacy Night

The Sunnyvale School District is excited to invite families with students in TK-5th grade to Family Literacy Night – an evening of stories, creativity, and community! This event will feature dinner, bookmark coloring, engaging storytime sessions in both English and Spanish, and a special presentation from the Sunnyvale Public Library about virtual library cards and the Library of Things.

Fairwood Walk-a-Thon!

The Fairwood Walk-a-Thon is this Friday - April 4!  Students will begin walking at 12:45 pm.  For students in grades TK-3rd Grade, parents should pick their children up after school and walk them to starting area, where we will have signs for each grade level.  For students in grades 4 and 5, students will participate in a check-in system with their teachers until 2:15.  At that time, students should be picked up by their families.  

We welcome families to join us for our walk-a-thon!  We hope every family will consider signing up for at least one volunteer session to support a successful event.  At this time, we have a few families that have signed up for several time slots in order to ensure they are covered, but you can help share the load by adding your name to assist.  If you haven't signed up already, you can sign up at: Fairwood Walk-a-Thon Volunteering

The Walk-a-Thon team is also continuing to seek donations of items such as canopies (lent to the school for this event only - you can pick it up again at the end of the event or the following Monday), crackers, and fresh fruit for use during the walk-a-thon.  You can fill in any unclaimed spots here: Fairwood Donations

Dine Out Event - Five Guys

After the Walk-a-Thon, your family is sure to have worked up an appetite!  Continue supporting Fairwood by picking up dinner at Five Guys!  This dine out event will take place at the Five Guys at 116 El Camino.  Our school will earn 25% of all sales!

Parent Education - Bullying Prevention

Fairwood Explorer is proud to partner with Project Cornerstone to offer a Bullying Prevention workshop on Wednesday, April 9 from 6:15-7:45 pm in the Fairwood multi-purpose room.  Please see the flyer below for additional details, and be sure to scan the QR code and register!  This program requires a minimum of 15 participants to ensure we can offer it for our families.In this workshop, you’ll learn:

• What bullying is and how to identify it
• Effective tools and action plans to reduce and
  prevent bullying
• Strategies to foster a respectful and safe
  environment for all
• Join us to set new standards of acceptable behavior
  and make a positive difference in your kid’s life.

Registration for 2025-2026 Is NOW OPEN!

Registration for the 2025-2026 school year is now open!  As a reminder, for families who registered for Fairwood previously as a neighborhood resident or through Open Enrollment, you did not need to register again.  For those families who are attending Fairwood on an Intradistrict or Interdistrict Transfer, you should have received an email from Manuel Salazar reminding you that your transfer will expire at the end of this year.  If you would like to remain at Fairwood, we recommend applying for Open Enrollment by February 14.

For those with children eligible to attend TK and Kindergarten next year, now is the time to register!  

Children who turn five on or between September 2, 2025 and September 1, 2026 are eligible to attend Transitional Kindergarten (TK)

Children who turn five years of age on or before September 1, 2025 are eligible to attend Kindergarten (K)

Preschool Registration

Registration is also currently opening for the 2025-2026 Sunnyvale School District preschool program.  We are excited to offer a Parent Pay Preschool Program at Lakewood Elementary! Our program provides 5-day-a-week classes, with an option of either morning or afternoon sessions. Each three-hour session gives your child an excellent opportunity to learn and grow in a structured, supportive environment. Our licensed teachers provide a nurturing environment and follow the California State Preschool Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations.

Immigration Rights and Support

With a variety of changes to immigration policies in the past few weeks, many families may have questions about Immigration Rights.  We would like to provide families with resources they can use to support their families and friends during this time.  

Santa Clara County Office of Education - Student and Famliy Reosurces

Asian Law Alliance - Can support families with legal advice with resources in a variety of language.  You can also make an appointment for free legal advice and support.  This organization provides support for all immigrants, not just Asian immigrants.

Red Cards - If you are questioned by law enforcement, you can exert your rights by providing one of these cards.  Cards are available in several different languages.

Healthy Foods and Snacks

At Fairwood Explorer, we encourage students to make healthy eating choices.  Recently, we have had an increase in the number of students bringing large sized bags of chips and candy to school.  Often, these students are sharing these items with other students.  While we would usually encourage sharing with others, the one item we always tell students should not be shared is food.  This if for many reasons, but the most important reason is food allergies.  Some of the students in our school have severe food allergies, and they must be cautious when they are offered new foods.  While many students learn to advocate for themselves, many of our students are young and when faced with the temptation to accept a delicious treat from a friend, it can be difficult to say no.  For this reason, we would like to offer a couple of reminders to families:

If you are providing food or snacks from home, please provide an individual option only.  While you may purchase items in a bulk size, students should not bring bulk-sized bags of chips and other snacks to school, as this often leads to sharing.  When it comes to sweet treats, we would like to encourage families to keep sweet treats as something to enjoy at home, perhaps when your child gets home from school!  If you need to send a treat with your child, please be sure it is an individual serving.  This will help us support the healthy eating habits of all students while also minimizing risk for students with food allergies.

We will be sharing these guidelines with students as well.  Moving forward, if we see students sharing large bags or quantities of food with peers during school, we will provide one warning.  If the student continues to share food, we will take the item and hold it in the office.  The student can pick up the item after school.  For those who are concerned that some students may not have access to food, we do offer a free breakfast and lunch to all students.  During these services, students can pick up as many fruits or vegetables as they would like.  

Seeking Parent Volunteers to Support the Fairwood Math Olympiad

Through the Sunnyvale Education Foundation, we have received a grant to support a Math Olympiad Program at Fairwood Explorer this Spring.  What is the Math Olympiad?  It is a competition for students in 4th and 5th grade in which students compete in teams to solve complex math problems.

We are currently looking for additional parent volunteers who would be interested in volunteering to support our school's Math Olympiad program.  As a volunteer, you will help monitor students as they work in teams to solve math problems to prepare for the competition!  Practice sessions will take place on Mondays from 2:30-3:30, with one Tuesday - March 18 since there is not school on Monday, March 17.  We are also in need of volunteers to support as judges on competition day - Saturday, March 29 from 8:00-12:30.

Area 5 Trustee Opportunity

The Sunnyvale School District is currently seeking applications for a new School Board Trustee in Area 5.  This position was vacated when Boad Member Eileen Le was elected to the Sunnyvale City Council.  Trustee Area 5 includes the Fairwood neighborhood, so all adults living within the Fairwood neighborhood could be eligible.  If you are interested in becoming a member of the Sunnyvale School District School board, you can submit your application until February 10.  Applications can be submitted through Jesus Romero, Assistant to the Superintendent, at jesus.romero@sesd.org or in person at 819 W. Fairwood Family Dine-Out

The next Fairwood Family Dine Out will take place on February 12 at Chuck E Cheese in Cupertino from 4-9 pm.  All students will receive a sticker on February 12 that will be valid for 10 free game play tokens that night!  Please join us and have fun with other Fairwood families!  

Future Chef Culinary Challenge
Calling all 1st to 5th grade students! Future Chef’s National Culinary Challenge is back! We are looking for your favorite main dish!!! The Future Chef’s competition is a fun way to learn new cooking skills and show off your love of food! One lucky winner from each elementary school from Sunnyvale School District will be chosen as a finalist to compete in our live cooking contest. All finalists will receive an award, a metal, chef coat, hat, and apron and a special prize! As a bonus, the winner of this event will be entered in the Future Chefs National Challenge for some additional great prizes!

Recipes can be submitted anytime between January 20, 2025 to February 7th, 2025, by using the QR code. The QR code will give you access to the Student Recipe Submission Portal. You can also get a paper recipe from your kitchen staff. If you have any question, please contact the Child Nutrition Department at 408-522-8200 X 1019.

Fairwood Explorer Talent Show

A big thank you to Ms. Byrne and our amazingly talented students for a wonderful Talent Show!  This year, our students showcased a variety of skills, including singing, dancing, piano playing, acting, magic, and more!  A big congratulations to all of the students who had the courage to participate in this year's talent show!  Pictures were shared via Class Dojo.

All students are invited to participate in the annual Yearbook Cover Design Contest!  One lucky winner will have their design featured on the front of this year's yearbook.  If you are interested in participating, you can pick up a template from Ms. Byrne in room 4.  Here are the details for entry.

Through the support and contributions of many Fairwood Families, the Alliance is proud to announce that we have reached our Direct Appeal fundraising goal!  Thank you so much for supporting our school!  If you haven't had a chance to contribute, donations are still being accepted throughout the remainder of the year!

On another good front, after several months of waiting for the Alliance's application for non-profit status to be reviewed by the IRS, we are please to share that the IRS recently notified the Fairwood Alliance that they are now reviewing our application.  We hope to hear back with a result soon, and we will keep you posted.

Astronomy Night

A big thank you to everyone who supported our Astronomy Night!  We had an amazing evening with beautiful, clear skies!  We were able to view several amazing things including: Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, the Crab Nebula, and the Orion Nebula!  Students had fun building constellation viewers and a model of the solar system they could fold into their pockets!  I also want to thank the San Jose Astronomical Association for providing the telescopes and Fairwood alumni parent, Tim Levine, for bringing back his "Text with the Stars" activity.  

Fairwood Open House and Book Fair

The Fairwood Open House will be this WEDNESDAY, January 29.  The night begins with Ms. Chen's Book Fair.  She will have the Book Fair open from 4:00-5:30!  You can purchase books on many different topics to help your child be an amazing reader and learner.  At 5:00, our teachers will open their classrooms for our Open House. This is a wonderful opportunity for current families to view their child(ren)'s work and chat with other families.  Many students take great pride in providing their parents with a tour through the school. For prospective families, this is a great opportunity to visit the Fairwood classrooms and speak with teachers and members of the community about our school. Our Open House will end at 6:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

We will work together to recruit students for participation in this year's competition beginning the first week in February.  Once students have registered, there will be a 6-week after-school program for 1 hour on Mondays (2:30-3:30), except for March 17 (there is no school), which will be moved to Tuesday, March 18.  During this time, students will be given practice problems that they will work in teams to solve.  During the final 2 weeks, students will create teams and practice in their teams in preparation for the competition.  There will be one weekend ½ day for the competition on Saturday, March 29. On this day, the teams would receive problems to solve, and they will be scored based on a rubric. To support this program, we will need 4-6 parent volunteers.

FUTURE CHEF CULINARY CHALLENGE
Calling all 1st to 5th grade students! Future Chef’s National Culinary Challenge is back! We are looking for your favorite main dish!!! The Future Chef’s competition is a fun way to learn new cooking skills and show off your love of food! One lucky winner from each elementary school from Sunnyvale School District will be chosen as a finalist to compete in our live cooking contest. All finalists will receive an award, a metal, chef coat, hat, and apron and a special prize! As a bonus, the winner of this event will be entered in the Future Chefs National Challenge for some additional great prizes!

Recipes can be submitted anytime between January 20, 2025 to February 7th, 2025, by using the QR code. The QR code will give you access to the Student Recipe Submission Portal. You can also get a paper recipe from your kitchen staff. If you have any question, please contact the Child Nutrition Department at 408-522-8200 X 1019.

Area 5 Trustee Opportunity

The Sunnyvale School District is currently seeking applications for a new School Board Trustee in Area 5.  This position was vacated when Boad Member Eileen Le was elected to the Sunnyvale City Council.  Trustee Area 5 includes the Fairwood neighborhood, so all adults living within the Fairwood neighborhood could be eligible.  If you are interested in becoming a member of the Sunnyvale School District School board, you can submit your application until February 10.  Applications can be submitted through Jesus Romero, Assistant to the Superintendent, at jesus.romero@sesd.org or in person at 819 W. Fairwood Donation Drive

A big thank you to all of the families who have donated to support the Fairwood Field Trips and Activities! We have almost reached our goal, which will help us preserve all of the planned trips and activities for this school year! If you haven't had a chance to donate yet, now is the time! The Fairwood Alliance is currently running a fundraising competition. The three classrooms (one from K-1, one from 2-3, and one from 4-5) with the highest rate of participation in the fundraising drive will win either a popcorn party or a hot cocoa party! Remember, this contest is based on participation - not dollars raised. Whether you donate $10 or $200, your ddonation will count toward your child's class participation. Help us reach our goal so we can continue to provide all of the amazing field trips and activities your child looks forward to each year!

Welcome Back!

We were very excited to welcome back Fairwood Families last week!  We hope everyone has gotten back into their routines smoothly after enjoying a wonderful break.  We are all excited for the fun classroom activities, field trips, and events to come in the new year, and we look forward to celebrating them together!

Astronomy Night

Calling all volunteers!  We are looking forward to our Astronomy Night on January 23.  Telescopes will be available for viewing from about 6:00 to 9:00 pm on the primary playground.  Assuming there are clear skies, we should have some great viewing with several planets visible during the evening.   In addition, we hope to have some fun activities available in the multipurpose room from 6:00 to 8:00 pm for those who would like a break from the cold. Students will be able to create a constellation, make a pocket solar system, and listen to some astronomy stories.   If you are interested, we will be selling hot chocolate to help you stay warm!  

We will need some amazing volunteers to support this event!  Please check out our sign up sheet and select a time when you would be available to support during this wonderful event.  All materials will be provided, and we can provide volunteers with directions for each activity.  You can sign up at: Astronomy Night Volunteers

Fairwood Holiday Craft Fair - November 16

The Fairwood Holiday Craft Fair is this weekend! Swing by to check out the variety of handcrafted goods and other items that will be for sale.  You can do some holiday shopping and check items off your list early!  Vendors will be offering jewelry, local honey, paintings, needle crafts, paper crafts, children’s books, and other festive gift ideas.  Support local families by vising the craft fair! Fairwood Character Trait of the Month - Honesty*

Truth and Consequences

Telling the truth is never easy—we adults know that all too well. No one wants to tell a partner he looks horrible in a new outfit, or a dear friend that she’s being an idiot. We consistently avoid even the smallest truths if they might not serve us well. Is it any wonder that the larger truths are even harder to tell?

We must perpetually keep that in mind when we are helping our children learn about truth. When faced with rejection, punishment, or deprivation, it is far easier to lie. So how do we make it easier for children to tell the truth?

First we make sure that honesty and truth are more highly valued than anything else. All of our actions should reflect this core value. We must hold both children and adults to the same expectations of truth. This makes it easier for children to feel safe when they’re considering telling the truth.

Be careful not to value discipline over truth telling. Never is a moment of truth more immediately destroyed than when the truth teller is still punished. Discussions will sometimes be lengthy, as the student has to take time to weigh the costs and benefits of telling the truth. Be patient. Once the truth is shared, find a way of reminding the student that his behavior was not acceptable, while also recognizing the child told the truth. One idea is to consider having the child "right their wrong" rather than assigning a random negative consequence. They could help clean up a mess they made, write a kind note to a person they upset, or apologize to a person who was impacted. In the end, we want to teach our children to own their mistakes, listen to others, and adjust their behaviors to avoid the same mistake again.

As this process of encouraging the truth becomes easier for adults, it will become easier for children as well. They will find that the truth doesn’t necessarily set them free, but it sure makes life a lot more tolerable.

Fairwood Fall Carnival - November 7

The Fairwood Fall Carnival will be taking place on November 7 from 2:15-5:00 pm.  The planning team is excitedly making plans for all of our students to participate in this fun event.  In fact, all students will receive 5 free tickets to join in the fun!

There are still a few spots remaining for volunteers.  The following classes still need volunteers: Jacobson, Salvador, Lopez, Joyce, Emmett, Doerr, Levine, Gabent, and the snack booth. No parent wants to spend the entire event working at a booth; they want some time to enjoy the event with their child.  Help share the load by signing up for one of the booth volunteer time slots.   Please go to your child(ren)’s classroom tab at this link and choose a volunteer slot.  If you prefer not to volunteer at a game, you can sign up on ticket or snack booth tabs! 

There is a role for everyone at the Fairwood Fall Carnival, and if each family commits to volunteering for at least one 30 minutes time slot, our students will have LOADS OF FUN!  We look forward to seeing you all there!

Trimester 1 Report Cards

The first Trimester ends this Friday.  Teachers will be completing report cards over the next week, and they will be sent home on November 15, 2024.  For more information about report cards, you can go to Sunnyvale School District Grading to learn more about your child's report card.  There are resources in English and Spanish.

Fairwood Costume Parade - October 31 from 8:05-8:35 am

Many families are excited for our annual Costume Parade. On October 31, students may come to school in a costume for the parade. After the parade, students will change out of their costumes for the remainder of the day. Please be sure your child can independently change into and out of thir costume. Some other helpful tips:

• No Weapons of any kind, even if it is part of your costume. Weapons brought to school will be collected in the office and a parent or guardian will need to come to pick it up.
• We do allow masks, but please make sure you use good judgment, as we are an elementary school with students ages 4-11.
• Speaking gf young children, we ask that all participants avoid gory or scary costumes.
• Parents are welcome to join us during the parade on the upper grade playground. If you do attend, we ask that you remain behind the student seats so that our studnets have the best view of the parade.

Of course, we never want to create a situation in which a family could feel left out if they don't celebrate events like Halloween. As usual, we will have an alternative activity ready to support families who do not want their child to participate in the parade. One of our paraeducators will be supervising students in the cafeteria while they work on fun activities. Fairwood Fall Carnival - November 7

The Fairwood Fall Carnival will be taking place on November 7 from 2:15-5:00 pm.  The planning team is excitedly making plans for all of our students to participate in this fun event.  In fact, all students will receive 5 free tickets to join in the fun! 

In order for the students to have a variety of booths to enjoy, the team is trying to recruit a booth from each classroom.  We are pleased to share that many more families have stepped forward to create a booth for their child's class. The following classes have a parent who has signed up to create a booth: Ms. Jacobson’s Class, Ms. Salvador's Class, Ms. Lopez's Class, Ms. Joyce’s Class, Ms. Hernandez's class, Ms. Hodson’s Class, Ms. Doerr’s Class, Mr. Emmett's Class, Ms. Thomas’s Class, Ms. Cuneo's Class, Ms. Lennie's class, and Ms Levine's class. Family Reading Night - October 23

One of our first community events will be our Family Reading Night on October 23 from 6:30-7:30.  This event allows students to be “reading detectives” as they search for clues to “Escape the Multi!”  Each grade level has their own set of clues, so if you joined us last year, your child will have new puzzles to solve!

We are looking for volunteers to help prepare materials prior to the event, set up on the day of the event, check students in during the event, supervise stations, and give out “completion prizes.”  We also need a couple of volunteers to help with clean up at the end.  In total, we will need approximately 30 volunteers to make this event a success.

Noche de Lectura Familiar - 23 de Octubre 

Uno de nuestros primeros eventos comunitarios será nuestra Noche de lectura familiar el 23 de octubre de 6:30 a 7:30. Este evento permite que los estudiantes sean "detectives de la lectura" mientras buscan pistas para "Escape the Multi!". School Site Council / English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) Representatives Vote

I am very excited to announce that we have three parents interested in filling the three vacant positions on this year’s School Site Council and English Learner Advisory Committee!  Our new candidates are:

Janessa Kats - I’m the mom of a kindergartener and 3rd grader at Fairwood. I would like to join the school's site council because it offers a unique opportunity to help shape important decisions, advocate for student needs, and contribute to creating a positive learning environment for all.

Eric Yeung - Hi everyone -- my name is Eric, and I'm currently a parent of a Fairwood kindergartener.  My wife and I and our two kids have been living in this community for about 5 years.  Ours is a bilingual household, and I myself went through a journey of learning and becoming comfortable with English, so I want to be able to help the school and our community foster English learning, and to make sure that the needs of our English learners are represented to the school and the District.  I look forward to partnering with all Fairwood families!

Anna Devochkina - As a proud Sunnyvale resident for the past 12 years and a dedicated mom of a 4th grader, I am deeply invested in our community. For the past 10 years, I have served as an admin for Sunnyvale Moms, a group dedicated to helping mothers connect, find resources, and share important information about our wonderful city. Through this group, I ve organized hundreds of events including the famous annual Easter Egg hunt, Sand and Castles events, advocated for more parks, and worked to keep our community strong during the challenges of COVID. Professional background. I hold a Master's degree in Linguistics and have worked as an ESL teacher at a local college.  For the last 15 years I have been doing marketing for startups and public companies, but my true passion lies in supporting the Sunnyvale community. I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute to the School Site Council and further support our school community!

Fairwood Fall Carnival - November 7

The Fairwood Fall Carnival will be taking place on November 7 from 2:15-5:00 pm.  The planning team is excitedly making plans for all of our students to participate in this fun event.  In fact, all students will receive 5 free tickets to join in the fun! 

In order for the students to have a variety of booths to enjoy, the team is trying to recruit a booth from each classroom.  We are pleased to have Booth Creation sign ups for the following classes so far: Ms. Jacobson’s Class, Ms. Joyce’s Class, Ms. Hodson’s Class, Ms. Doerr’s Class, and Ms. Thomas’s Class. We are also looking for volunteers to help run the booths on the day of the event.  No parent wants to spend the entire event working with the booth; they want some time to enjoy the event with their child.  Help share the load by signing up for one of the booth volunteer time slots.  You can cheer for students while they play!  Simply go to your child(ren)’s classroom tab at the link above and choose a volunteer slot.  If you would prefer not to volunteer at a game, you can sign up on ticket or snack booth tabs!

There is a role for everyone at the Fairwood Fall Carnival, and if each family commits to volunteering for at least one 30 minutes time slot, our students will have LOADS OF FUN!  Thank you!

Fairwood Disc Golf Clinic

¿Qué es el Disc Golf?

Family Reading Night

One of our first community events will be our Family Reading Night on October 23 from 6:30-7:30.  This event allows students to be “reading detectives” as they search for clues to “Escape the Multi!”  Each grade level has their own set of clues, so if you joined us last year, your child will have new puzzles to solve!

We are looking for volunteers to help prepare materials prior to the event, set up on the day of the event, check students in during the event, supervise stations, and give out “completion prizes.”  We also need a couple of volunteers to help with clean up at the end.  In total, we will need approximately 30 volunteers to make this event a success.

Uno de nuestros primeros eventos comunitarios será nuestra Noche de lectura familiar el 23 de octubre de 6:30 a 7:30. Help Needed: School Site Council and English Learner Advisory Committee

I am sad to report that we have not had any families come forward for our open positions on the School Site Council or English Learner Advisory Committee.  These groups play a vital role in supporting the vision of our school.  We are currently looking for  at least 2 representatives for the School Site Council and at least 1 additional rep for ELAC.  There are only three meetings a year, and they will take place on Google Meet from 6:00-7:00 pm on November 14, February 13 and May 8.  Volunteering in one of these roles fulfills your community/school volunteer obligation for the full school year due to their importance.  If you are willing to nominate yourself for one of these roles, please complete the School Volunteer Form or sign up on the sheets outside Mrs. Romander's office.

Fairwood T-Shirts

Do you have gently used Fairwood t-shirts that your children have outgrown?  The Fairwood office is collecting outgrown, gently used Fairwood t-shirts for families who enroll their children after the annual Alliance order has been placed or for families who may need assistance to provide their child with a shirt.  If you have a clean, gently used, outgrown Fairwood shirt at home, please drop it off in the office, and we will be sure it finds a happy new home!

Panorama Survey

Each year, families have the opportunity to share their thoughts and input with the school through the Panorama Survey.  This survey is given once in the fall and once in the spring to help us track our responsiveness to the needs of our community. A link was sent to your “on file” email address titled "Sunnyvale School District (CA) Request for Family Feedback" on September 16.  Please take a few minutes to provide your feedback to support our school.  If you cannot find the email, please check your spam folder, then contact Shana Riehl (shana.riehl@sesd.org) if you still can’t find it.

Fingerprinting Coupons

In a recent meeting with the Sunnyvale School District, I discussed how the District could better support the Fairwood Explorer program, especially the registration of our family volunteers.  For three years, we have been fortunate to have the support of the Fairwood Alliance to provide FREE fingerprinting for all Fairwood volunteers, and we would like to thank them for their support!

Beginning this week, the Sunnyvale School District will now support FREE fingerprinting for all Fairwood Families.  To take advantage of this offer, you can come by the Fairwood office to pick up your FREE fingerprinting coupon.  Our team will provide you with the coupon, the application form, and the directions for how to complete your fingerprinting. For any family that has been waiting to complete their fingerprinting, now is your chance!  Stop by the Fairwood office to get you Fingerprinting coupon beginning September 24 at 11:20.  Can’t make it at that time, don’t worry!  The Fairwood Office hours are 7:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Nurse's Corner

The season of fall is again approaching--which means it is time to get your flu and Covid-19 vaccines! A new version of the Covid-19 vaccine was recently released specifically for current (2024-25) variants of the virus. So, even if you have received a Covid vaccine in the past, it would be wise to get the new, updated shot. The flu shot is also updated each year to match closely to the version of the virus that is currently circulating. Both of these vaccines are recommended for everyone 6 months and older to reduce your risk for severe illness and hospitalization. Check the website of your health plan to find out how to get your vaccinations--there may be walk-in clinics available or an appointment may be required. Coding Club at the Sunnyvale Library

Once a month on Tuesdays at the Sunnyvale Library - This program is for grades 3 to 6. Work on fun coding projects in a group setting. You are encouraged to bring your own laptop. Please arrive early, registrants' spots are guaranteed only until the start of the program. Register for Coding Club Note: a library card is required for this program.

Aztec Dance with Calpulli Tonalehqueh

On September 28 from 3:00 to 3:45, experience a vibrant and educational cultural dance performance by Calpulli Tonalehqueh.  This program is for all ages.  This program will be on the Library Plaza. No registration is required, but space is limited.

Graphic Novel Book Club at the Sunnyvale Library

Graphic novels rule at our book club! Join us monthly to discuss a fun graphic novel.This month, we will discuss "Cat Kid Comic Club" If you don't have a chance to read it, you are still welcome to come and listen or talk about your favorite graphic novel. As a club, feel free to suggest our next read. This program is for grades 3 to 6.  This program will be in the Library Program Room. Sunnyvale Library Sewing Lab

Work on projects, fix garments and give your old clothes new life! Bring your own fabric, projects and ideas. We'll provide the sewing machines, thread and scrap fabric for practice. Get help with the basic functions of modern sewing machines and some intermediate techniques, as well as how to troubleshoot common issues. Sample the Brother XM2701 machine that is included in our popular sewing machine kit. Note that this is not a class; there will be no formal instruction.

This program is for adults only. Registration is not required. Machines, tables and supplies are limited and will be first come, first served.

School Site Council and English Learner Advisory Committee

This week, we will have our first School Site Council and English Learner Advisory Committee meeting.  We are still in need of family representatives for both of these teams. The School Site Council advises on the development of our School Plan for Student Achievement, reviewing our annual goals and identifying actions to help us reach those goals.  The English Learner Advisory Committee focuses on how we are supporting our English Learners as they work toward proficiency in the English language.

Fairwood Volunteer Trainings

This week, Mrs. Riehl and I will be hosting volunteer training sessions for some of our most common Classroom Volunteer positions.  These trainings are to help you understand the responsibilities of each type of volunteer as well as ask questions about to help you identify a role that works for you and to build your confidence!  We will have two trainings this week:

Wednesday, September 18 at 6:00 pm on Google Meet.

Thursday, September 19 at 8:00 am in the multipurpose room.

We strongly encourage all parent volunteers to attend one of these training sessions.  The volunteer positions we will cover are:

School Lunches and Lunch Drop Off

Fairwood is proud to serve a free breakfast and lunch for all students.  To view our school menu, you can go to the Fairwood Menu on the Sunnyvale School District website.  Some families prefer to send lunch from home, which is also a great option!

For those sending a lunch from home, we understand that sometimes families need to drop off a lunch after school starts, either to keep food warm or due to a busy day!  If you are dropping off a lunch after the school day starts, we ask that you use our lunch drop off rack.  This large, black rack is located next to the campus door.  If your child’s name is already on the lunch box, you can drop it off and go.  If there is not a name on the lunch box, you can use one of the available sticky notes to add your child’s name.

If you are dropping off lunches, it is important to notify your child ahead of time. Let them know that they should check the cart in the office.  While we try to notify classrooms when items are dropped off, we also work to minimize the number of interruptions to the classroom.  Since recess and lunch times tends to be busy, we cannot always guarantee that your child will receive a timely reminder to check the rack.  As we work to support children’s independence, knowing where to look for their lunch and how to get it are important self-management skills.

The drop-off rack isn’t only for lunches!  If your child forgets a jacket, water bottle, or homework in the morning, you can also drop these items off on the rack.  When your child says, “Oh no!  I forgot my ________,” you can reassure them that you will drop it off, and they should come to the office at their recess to pick it up.

This announcement sometimes brings up questions about food delivery from vendors such as DoorDash and Uber Eats.  Unfortunately, we are not able to manage food deliveries from outside vendors for students. 

Dogs on Campus

Per our District policy, dogs (even dogs on a leash or carried in their owner’s arms) are not allowed on school grounds, unless they are a service animal that is specifically trained to work with a person with a disability.  We love all of our families’ furry friends, but we ask that you leave pets at home if you will be entering the school campus.

For those of you walking your dog to the campus, we do ask that you clean up after your pet.  We have had some instances of dog poop being left on the sidewalk or in the native garden, especially in the mornings.  Students who accidentally step in the dog poop may unwittingly track it into their classroom.  To help support the health and safety of our students, please be sure to clean up after your pet.  If you do not have a bag, you can always come to the office to ask for a bag, and we will be happy to help you.

Volunteer Painting Project

Are you an artist?  Would you be willing to volunteer your skills to help beautify our school campus?  In our campus quad (between the multipurpose room and the library), we have two small murals with caterpillars that spell out the alphabet and the numbers 1-20.  Over the years, these paintings have weathered, and they are now being defaced due to their poor condition.  We are looking for two types of volunteers:

1.  Families who are willing to donate or solicit donations of materials (paint, brushes, drop cloths, etc.) to repaint the murals

2.  Volunteers who would be willing to lend their artistic expertise to paint new murals.  

September is Attendance Awareness Month

This week’s topic: Medical and Dental Appointments

Medical and Dental appointments can have a big impact on school attendance.  Students who may be undergoing treatments that require frequent check ups or adjustments can quickly fall behind if they are missing school to attend these appointments.  Of course, the health of our students is incredibly important, and we understand the importance of routine health care.  There are things you can do, though, to reduce the impact on student learning.

Tip 1: Always try to schedule appointments either before or after school.  Sometimes the doctor’s office will default to times during school, and it is always good to ask if they have times available before or after school.  Many doctor’s offices will have appointments available that support student learning.

Tip 2: If you are unable to get an appointment before or after school, try to book a time first thing in the morning or close to the end of the school day.  This can reduce the amount of time your child misses.

Tip 3: Send your child to school for the time they are able to attend.  Is your child’s appointment at 10:30?   Have them come to school until 10:00.  Is the appointment finished by 11:00? Take your child to school for the afternoon.  Even though they may only get in a half day, they will have less to “catch up on” when they return.

Tip 4: If you are starting a specialized treatment, like orthodontics, ask if the office offers before or after school appointments before choosing your provider.  It can be frustrating to start a course of treatment, then learn that the office has inflexible scheduling.  Asking this question before you start can help you choose a provider that will support your child’s health and education!

Teacher Learning Day

Tomorrow is the first Teacher Learning Day of the 2024-2025 school year.  TK and Kindergarten students will still be dismissed at 11:20.  First through 5th grade students will be dismissed at 12:30 pm.  On Teacher Learning Days, many staff members participate in staff development or team meetings, so we do not have capacity to provide supervision after 12:30, unless your child is enrolled in one of our after-school programs.  Please be sure to arrange for your child to be picked up on time at 12:30.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Fairwood Back to School Picnic and Volunteer Fair, and a big thank you to the Fairwood Alliance for sponsoring this event!  It was great to see everyone socializing and getting to know each other.   An extra big shout out to those who signed up to volunteer at an event this year!  We will continue working to get families signed up to support at least one event this school year.

Parent Teacher Conferences

The week of September 23-September 27 will be Parent Teacher Conference week.  All students will be dismissed at 11:20 every day during this week.  Teachers will be arranging to meet with all of their families to share information about their child’s progress and goals for the year.  If you haven’t heard from your child’s teacher regarding signing up for a conference, please reach out to make sure you have time reserved.

Fairwood 101

Fairwood Alliance is hosting their annual Fairwood 101 Training this week!  This training will connect you with members of the Fairwood Alliance and support you in learning more about how our community collaborates to sponsor school events. In addition, they will provide tips and guidance regarding volunteering at school.  While this training is especially supportive for families who are new to Fairwood, it is also a good refresher for returning families.  All families are asked to join one of the two available sessions.  The first session is on Monday, September 9 at 6:00 pm on Zoom.  The second session is on Friday, September 13 at 8:00 am in the Fairwood multipurpose room.

In addition to classroom volunteer positions, we have a number of school volunteer positions that we are looking to fill.  We hope you will consider whether you could support one of these roles.  (Please note: Information on how to volunteer for one of these roles will be provided below all of the descriptions.):

Except for the Fairwood Alliance Board position, you can submit your interest in serving on one of the school volunteer positions by filling out the Fairwood School Volunteer Interest Form or adding your name to one of the sign-up sheets hanging on the office windows in the quad.

September is School Attendance Awareness Month

This week's Attendance Topic: Tardiness

Playground supervision begins at 7:30 a.m. every school day.  To ensure students’ safety, we ask that you do not send your child to school before this time, as there is no proper supervision for them.  The cafeteria is open at 7:30 a.m. for any students who wish to eat a free school breakfast.  (Please note: Students have two times when they can get their breakfast - before school from 7:30-7:55 or at recess from 10:00-10:20.  Students will need to choose the time that works best for them, as they will not be able to get breakfast at both times.)

Students should arrive in line and on time for the warning bell at 7:55 a.m.  Any student who arrives at the class line after 8:00 a.m. will be marked tardy.

What is the impact of Tardiness?

• The first few minutes of class are loaded with information.

• Being tardy interrupts the class.

• It is embarrassing to arrive late to the class, especially for shy children.

• Arriving late can cause a student to be disoriented, as they may not understand what is happening in class when they arrive.

• Being late to class develops a habit of arriving late.

• Students that frequently arrive late to school often have more difficulty in school and ultimately have a higher rate of dropping out of school.

• A habitually late student may have lower self-esteem and confidence because of academic difficulties from missing instructional time.

Students who are tardy should report to the front office to receive a tardy pass.

Unexcused Tardy: Students who are not in their classroom by the second bell (8:00 a.m.)

Excused Tardy: Students who are late due to a medical or dental appointment and can provide a note confirming the appointment.

Fairwood Back to School Picnic and Volunteer Fair

Calling all Fairwood Families!  Join us this Friday at 5:30 pm for our annual Back to School picnic.  This event is a great opportunity to meet other families and make connections within our Fairwood community!  This year, we will also be hosting a volunteer fair, where you can learn more about the many wonderful events taking place at Fairwood this year, and sign up to help support one of them.  A taco truck and Kona Ice will be on site to sell items for families who wish to purchase on site.  You can also bring your own picnic dinner from home or your favorite take out!

Scholastic Book Fair

On September 3-5, Mrs. Chen will be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair outside the library from 8:00-3:00.  Students can purchase books based on their interests.  A portion of all proceeds will be donated to Fairwood to purchase books for our library.  Can’t make it to the Book Fair?  You can order books online using the information sent home from Mrs. Chen.  Questions?  You can email Iwen Chen at iwen.chen@sesd.org

September is School Attendance Awareness Month

Students are not learning when they are not at school, so attendance is very important. This month, we will be honoring School Attendance Awareness Month by highlighting some tips and facts about school attendance.

This week: Absences

All California children between the ages of 6 and 18 are required to attend school.  The state has a very small number of reasons a child can be absent from school, generally illness and bereavement.  It is important to report your child’s absences each time they are absent. We are able to mark a student absent without a doctor’s note for three consecutive days.  After three days, we will require a doctor’s note to continue marking the student absent.  If a student has more than 10 days, consecutive or nonconsecutive, we will require a doctor’s note for every subsequent absence, per our District policies.

To report an absence, please call the school at 408-523-4870 or email melina.marin@sesd.org on the first day of your child's absence. Please make sure that you leave your child's first and last name, name of the teacher, date(s) of the absence, reason for the absence and your relationship to the student. Students are responsible for missed homework. Missed homework will be given to the student upon returning to school.  If your child is absent for more than one day, please be sure to communicate a reason for each day of absence.

It is in your child's best interest to plan vacations while school is not in session. In order to receive Independent Study credits, you need to come into the office to complete the Independent Study Contract. These contracts cannot be issued prior to September 15 or after June 1.  Contracts will be granted only when you contact the school office 5 school days in advance of absence due to travel. While this is no substitute for regular classroom instruction, it will help your child stay more current with their class.

Families will sometimes ask for homework for absences that do not qualify for Independent Study.  Teachers will not provide homework for these absences.

Playground Use After School

Fairwood runs a variety of after school programs each day from KLAS to the programs coordinated by the Fairwood Alliance.   In order to ensure the safety of all students and access to reserved spaces on campus, it is important for all students not enrolled in an after school program to exit the school at the end of the school day.  We have noticed a large number of children playing on the playgrounds after dismissal.  We want to remind families that the school playgrounds are closed after school, except for those who have reserved the space for an After School Program.  We are very fortunate to have a lovely park just outside our gates.  We encourage families to use the park after school to allow fun time for your child and their friends.  

Historically, a number of families make a routine to attend the park after the Early Dismissal Days on TLDs and Fridays. We encourage you to join them for a fun afternoon in the park!

Never miss an important message when you stay connected with the Fairwood Community.  Fairwood has three primary communication platforms:

School Announcements and Emergency Broadcasts - SchoolMessenger

Mrs. Romander will send a weekly Fairwood Falcon Flier with information about the week, important events, and educational tips.  

If we need to send an emergency broadcast to families, it will be sent through SchoolMessenger.

SchoolMessenger sends information by email, text message, and phone calls.  At Fairwood, we generally use email and text message.

If you opt out of these messages, you will not receive any communications from the school office.

Teacher and Classroom Messages - Class Dojo

Teachers and Staff primarily send messages through Class Dojo.  Class Dojo allows you to translate messages and provides an easy “text like” platform.

You can choose to receive Dojo messages as a daily digest or individually.

Please note: The office team does not regularly use Class Dojo, so messages to the office are better sent through email.

Your child’s teacher may also prefer to communicate by email for urgent matters.  We encourage you to check with the teacher to know the best way to communicate.

Fairwood Alliance - Konstella

The Fairwood Alliance, your parent group on campus, communicates through Konstella.  They will share information about after school activities, upcoming events, and exciting opportunities through this platform.

We know that the use of multiple platforms can be confusing, but we want to make sure you have a clear understanding of where the messages you receive are coming from.  Please feel free to reach out to the appropriate party if you have any questions about one of these platforms.

Fun on the Run

Fun on the Run is a FREE after school program that will happen Thursdays at Fairwood.  There are only a couple of more spots available, so be sure to stop by the office to reserve a spot.  The first session begins on Thursday, September 12!

Back to School Night - August 28

Fairwood will be hosting Back to School Night for all families on August 28.  The schedule will be:

5:30 - TK-2nd Grade classroom presentations in classrooms

6:00 - Whole school presentation in multi-purpose room

6:30 - 3rd-5th grade classroom presentations in classrooms

During your child’s classroom presentation, you will have the opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and hear more about what you child will be learning this year.  Teachers will also discuss the volunteer opportunities available in their classrooms.  An informational flyer will be provided with details about how to register as a volunteer for this school year.  During the whole school presentation, we will share information about the school year ahead and how families can be involved.  

While we always enjoy seeing our students, Back to School Night is designed to provide parents with information about the year.  We encourage you to consider making alternative arrangements for your child, as we will not be providing supervision for students and classroom spaces are limited.  We also want to remind families that Back to School Night is not the appropriate time for individual conversations with the classroom teacher.  You will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s specific learning path during Parent Teacher Conferences at the end of September.

Fun on the Run Update

Last week, a flyer for Fun on the Run was sent through Peachjar. Fun on the Run is a free after school program run by the City of Sunnyvale on Thursdays at Fairwood.  Unfortunately, the wrong flyer was submitted, causing some confusion about registration.  You can find the correct flyers below, along with the forms needed to show interest in this program.  You can submit your completed forms at the Fairwood office. Extra copies of the forms will also be available in the office.  Space is extremely limited, and submissions will be taken in the order received.  Please Note: Submissions will not be accepted online.

Fairwood Back to School Picnic and Volunteer Fair

The annual Fairwood Back to School Picnic will be held on September 6 from 5:30-7:00.  Bring a picnic dinner to enjoy in the grass area of Fairwood park, or you can purchase food from the Taco Truck that will be parked nearby!  Kona Ice will also be on site selling a cool treat for families.

In addition to enjoying conversation with fellow Fairwood families, we will also be sharing information about key volunteer roles for Fairwood events!  This year, we want to build our teams earlier to help support the teams as they plan events for the year!

Fairwood 101 and Fairwood Volunteer Trainings

The Fairwood Alliance will be hosting their annual Fairwood 101 on September 10 at 6:00 pm on Zoom and on September 13 at 8:00 am in the multi-purpose room.  This training is for all Fairwood families - returning and new!  We ask returning families to join us to help share their knowledge and experience as we review the expectations for volunteers and discuss the opportunities that await you!

This general training will be followed up with a more specific focus training for key volunteer roles.  These trainings will be led by Mrs. Romander and Ms. Riehl, and they will be held on September 18 at 6:00 pm over Zoom and September 19 at 8:00 am in the multi-purpose room.

Please mark your calendars now to attend both the Fairwood 101 training and the Focus training of your choice.

      Fairwood Expectations        

Attendance and Punctuality:
Regular attendance and arriving on time are essential for academic success. Please ensure your child is at school every day at 7:55 so they have time to be seated in their classroom by 8:00 am. If your child will be absent, please notify the school office - 408-523-4870 or email melina.marin@sesd.org. You can find information on attendance policies on our website under Family Resources -> Attendance Policy. 

As we shared at this morning's presentation, attendance is very important.  Did you know that a child who misses 10 days of school has missed 5% of their instruction for the year? Last year, 12% of Fairwood students were chronically absent. This year, Fairwood will be strictly following State and District policies regarding attendance.  Any student who has more than three unexcused absences will be considered truant, and may need to meet with school officials to develop an attendance plan.  Chronic absenteeism may require support from the District Student Attendance Review Board.  If you are having trouble getting your child to school daily, please let us know.  We are here to help!

One of the biggest contributors to Fairwood absenteeism is extended family vacations.  Please consider our school's calendar and plan any trips, vacations, or family visits for the days in which school is not in session.  If your child must be out of school during the school session, we ask that you use the Short Term Independent Study option to still get attendance credit for your child.  Independent Study is available beginning September 15 and can be used for absences of between 5-10 days.  Every family is able to apply for a maximum to 10 days of short term Independent Study each year.  Applications must be requested at least two weeks prior to the first day of absence.  If approved, your child will receive work from the teacher to complete during the absence.  Your child will need to be present in school on the contractural return date with the assigned work completed.  If they return on time with their completed work, the will receive full credit for attendance.

Absences without an Independent Study contract will be unexcused, and the classroom teacher will not be able to provide work for the student to complete for credit.  This includes all absences longer than 10 days. Important: You must notify the office for approval of your contract request.  Teachers are not able to approve Independent Study contract requests. 

Kindness and Responsibility:
We expect students and families to treat peers, teachers, staff, and community members with kindness. Responsibility for actions and maintaining a positive attitude are key to a safe and inclusive environment.

Technology and Cell Phone Use:
Per the District Parent Handbook, students are able to bring cell phones to campus, but they are to be turned off and out of site during the school day.  If your child attends an after school program, they must also adhere to this policy during the after school program.  If a student has their cell phone visible or is using their cell phone while on campus without permission, they will be asked to put it away.  If the behavior continues, further consequences may be given, including restriction from being able to have their cell phone on campus.

Students are expected to use technology on campus in accordance with the District's Student Technology Use Policy.  To support the safe use of technology, we encourage parents to monitor technology use at home.

Campus Safety:
All volunteers and visitors must sign in at the office and wear a volunteer/visitor sticker.  

Campus gates will be closed when the 8:00 morning bell rings, and they will be re-opened approximately 3-5 minutes prior to student pick-up times.

To keep our parking lots safe, we ask that all families follow the following drop off and pick up procedures:

• Please drive slowly in the parking lot.
• Do not park your vehicle in the drop off area (against the curb).  The painting in our parking lot is very faded, but there is no parking along the curb, except for one handicapped space.  
• Please drop your child off at the curb, not in the next lane over or in the parking area.  Students running through the parking lot are at a high risk of getting hit by a car.  
• If you are walking to school, please stay on the sidewalks and in the crosswalks. It can be tempting to cut through the parking lots, but this is dangerous.  
• If you are using either drop off/pick up area, you must remain in your car at all times.  
• Please be patient and courteous.  Everyone is in a hurry in the morning, but our kids' safety is most important.  

Personal Items and Sports Equipment:
We respectfully request that all personal items, toys, and sports equipment remain at home.  Students will be provided with any necessary equipment and supplies at school.  If your child has items of personal value, we recommend leaving those home as well (i.e. fancy pens, an expensive water bottle, etc.). While we try to maintain a safe enviornment, accidents do happen, and we do not want valuable items to be lost, damaged, or stolen. 

Communication:
Please keep your contact information up-to-date to receive important updates. Feel free to reach out to the front office if you need to update your email contacts, phone numbers, or address.

Student Wellness:
Our District wellness policy encourages families to send nutritious foods and snacks to school.  Occassionally, you may choose to send your child a small treat in their lunch. Please remember that sharing or trading foods is not allowed at Fairwood.  For this reason, please send your child with reasonable portions.  We sometimes have kids show up with a large bag of chips or cookies.  This encourages food sharing, which may pose risks for some of our students.  

Families often inquire about sending birthday treats to school.  Fairwood is happy to acknowledge student birthdays, but we do not celebrate them at school.  Please keep all birthday treats at home for celebrations with families.  Our District Wellness Policy does not permit birthday treats at school.  For this reason, any birthday treats sent to school will be sent home at the end of the day, rather than being distributed to students.  

Student Items and Lost and Found:
Every year, we have hundreds of items showing up in our Lost and Found.  You can make sure your child's items are never lost by labeling them clearly.  The items that end up in Lost and Found the most are jackets, sweaters, water bottles, and lunch boxes.  Take a few minutes to label these items this week so that they can be easily returned to their owner if they are found.  If your child is missing an item, our lost and found cart is in the quad area between the office, the multi, and the library.

Al comenzar un nuevo año escolar, queríamos compartir algunas expectativas clave para todas las familias y estudiantes:

Asistencia y puntualidad:

Si su hijo asiste a un programa después de la escuela, también debe cumplir con esta política durante el programa después de la escuela. Si un estudiante tiene su teléfono celular visible o está usando su teléfono celular mientras está en el campus sin permiso, se le pedirá que lo guarde. Si el comportamiento continúa, se pueden dar más consecuencias, incluida la restricción de poder tener su teléfono celular en el campus.

Se espera que los estudiantes usen la tecnología en el campus de acuerdo con la Política de uso de tecnología para estudiantes del distrito. Para apoyar el uso seguro de la tecnología, alentamos a los padres a monitorear el uso de la tecnología en el hogar.

Seguridad del campus:
Todos los voluntarios y visitantes deben registrarse en la oficina y usar una calcomanía de voluntario/visitante.

Las puertas del campus se cerrarán cuando suene la campana de las 8:00 a. m. y se volverán a abrir aproximadamente de 3 a 5 minutos antes de la hora de recogida de los estudiantes.

Para mantener seguros nuestros estacionamientos, solicitamos que todas las familias sigan los siguientes procedimientos de entrega y recogida:

• Conduzca lentamente en el estacionamiento.
• No estacione su vehículo en el área de entrega (contra la acera). La pintura en nuestro estacionamiento está muy descolorida, pero no hay estacionamiento junto a la acera, excepto un espacio para discapacitados.
• Deje a su hijo en la acera, no en el carril de al lado ni en el área de estacionamiento. Los estudiantes que corren por el estacionamiento corren un alto riesgo de ser atropellados por un automóvil.
• Si camina hacia la escuela, permanezca en las aceras y en los cruces peatonales. Puede resultar tentador atravesar los estacionamientos, pero es peligroso.
• Si utiliza cualquiera de las áreas de entrega y recogida, debe permanecer en su automóvil en todo momento.
• Por favor, sea paciente y cortés. Todos tienen prisa por la mañana, pero la seguridad de nuestros niños es lo más importante.

Artículos personales y equipo deportivo:
Solicitamos respetuosamente que todos los artículos personales, juguetes y equipo deportivo permanezcan en casa. Los estudiantes recibirán todo el equipo y los suministros necesarios en la escuela. Si su hijo tiene artículos de valor personal, le recomendamos que los deje en casa también (es decir, bolígrafos elegantes, una botella de agua costosa, etc.). Si bien tratamos de mantener un entorno seguro, los accidentes ocurren y no queremos que se pierdan, dañen o roben artículos valiosos.

Comunicación:
Mantenga su información de contacto actualizada para recibir actualizaciones importantes. No dude en comunicarse con la oficina principal si necesita actualizar sus contactos de correo electrónico, números de teléfono o dirección.

Bienestar estudiantil:
Nuestra política de bienestar del distrito alienta a las familias a enviar alimentos nutritivos y refrigerios a la escuela. Ocasionalmente, puede optar por enviar a su hijo un pequeño obsequio en su almuerzo. Recuerde que compartir o intercambiar alimentos no está permitido en Fairwood. Por este motivo, envíe a su hijo con porciones razonables. A veces, los niños se presentan con una bolsa grande de papas fritas o galletas. Esto fomenta el intercambio de alimentos, lo que puede representar riesgos para algunos de nuestros estudiantes.

We want to welcome you to the 2024-2025 school year!  I hope you have all enjoyed the summer and enjoyed some family time with loved ones!  The new school year is about to begin, and we are looking forward to seeing you all back at school!  We wanted to share some important dates with all of you to prepare you for the new year! New this year: The Sunnyvale School District is committed to providing all basic school supplies for students, so we will not be posting class wish lists.  If you purchase items for school, we suggest keeping these items at home to use for homework or projects. The teachers may share a list of more specialized "wish list" items for their classrooms during Back-to-School Night.
