Preschool Q&A

  • What can I do if I suspect my child has a learning/speech delay?

The Sunnyvale School District Preschool Center provides a range of special education services and classes for three to five-year-old students who demonstrate developmental, communication, or learning delays. Students must qualify for special education services through the District's assessment and eligibility process. If you have concerns about your child's development, language/communication, self-help skills, pre-academics, or gross/fine motor development, please call the Preschool Office at (408) 522-8213 and press #2.

Does your program offer extended daycare for students?

No. Our State Preschool Program operates Monday - Friday with a morning and afternoon session during the school year. Families that qualify for State Preschool may choose either the morning or afternoon session.

Days and hours for special education programs vary by program type.

Who should I notify if my child will be absent?

Please call the main Preschool Office at 408 522-8213 and press #3.

Please state your child's name, teacher, and reason for their absence.   Parents of special education students also need to notify the bus service if appropriate.

Absences not reported to the Preschool Office are considered unexcused.

Extended absences (beyond 5 days) or vacations during school days are not encouraged as they can result in a loss of instructional time and can negatively affect student progress. Parents should notify the preschool office in writing of any extended absence

What is the birthday/celebration policy at the preschool center?

Birthdays are celebrated in the last 10 minutes of the program day. Parents should contact the classroom teacher in advance. Celebration foods should be commercially prepared/packaged and meet nutritional guidelines or parents may consider gifting a book to the classroom on your child's behalf. If your family does not recognize these celebrations, your child will be involved in another supervised activity outside of the classroom. Please make the teacher/office aware of your preference in this area.

    What is the observation policy?

All classroom visitors must register with the front office. To prevent unnecessary disruptions, observations are limited to once per month for thirty minutes. Classroom observations must be scheduled with the administration.

Are volunteers allowed in the classrooms?

The State Preschool Program encourages parents to volunteer in the classroom. If you have a special skill or talent, please notify the teacher if you would like to share your expertise. Volunteering in a special education classroom will require at least one week prior to notification. Please discuss this with your child's teacher.

Volunteers must submit proof of TB clearance.

Can I bring a snack to share with my child's class?

According to the district Wellness Policy, any food used on campus during the school day should reinforce healthy eating and good nutrition. Families are encouraged to send nutritious foods to school for their child's own consumption.
