Kids Learning After School (KLAS)

Kids Learning After School (KLAS) provides a safe and enriching environment for students to receive help with academic, physical, and arts enrichment activities, which are based on the needs and interests of participating students at seven school sites within the District: Bishop, Ellis, Fairwood, Lakewood, San Miguel, and Vargas Elementary schools and Columbia Middle School. Students are welcome to join KLAS to improve academic achievement and self-esteem and enjoy the fun and enriching learning activities.
Kids Learning After School (KLAS) is funded through the California "Extended Learning Opportunities" grant. This grant prioritizes students who are foster youth, receiving homelessness intervention services, come from low socio-economic households, or are classified as English learners. This enables the Sunnyvale School District to provide after-school support and care. All of these designations are determined at the district level. Students who qualify under these criteria receive priority registration to the KLAS program. We intend to serve as many Sunnyvale students as possible. The enrollment process will begin in mid-February and will target students qualifying under these four criteria first. Once initial registrations are complete, the remaining seats will open to all students at each school site. A "waitlist" will be maintained so we can move students into the program as soon as possible, though it must be made clear that no non-qualifying student is guaranteed KLAS placement. Families should make after-school care plans accordingly, even though our hope is to seat and support as many of our families as possible. For more information, please contact your school principal directly or contact Paul Slayton, Director of Student Support Services, at paul.slayton@sesd.org.
