CMS Coaching & Playtime Policy

  • Columbia Middle School’s Coaching philosophy emphasizes creating a relaxed, supportive environment conducive to learning. Athletes must understand and adhere to the standards and behaviors expected from both coaches and teammates to foster this optimal learning environment.

    Columbia Middle School's Playtime Policy

    Playtime Determination:

There is no minimum playtime requirement for student-athletes. The amount of playtime will be determined by the coaching staff based on factors including, but not limited to:

    • Attendance and participation in practices

    • Effort, attitude, and behavior on and off the field

    • Skill level and performance

    • Team strategy and game situations

While the team’s goal is to win, participation in practices and games also plays a vital role in the athlete’s development. Coaches will aim to foster teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth throughout the season.

    Opportunities for Skill Development

Athletes will have daily opportunities in practice to prove themselves and earn a spot on the court. Those not currently in the primary rotation are encouraged to attend practice on a regular basis so they may be integrated into the team experience. Participation in practice allows athletes to demonstrate growth and challenge coaches’ assessments, but game participation is not guaranteed.

When conditions allow—whether the team is leading comfortably or significantly behind—coaches may provide additional opportunities for athletes to participate in games. However, playing time will always be subject to the coach’s discretion.

    Communication and Expectations

Coaches will clearly communicate each athlete's standing and expectations within the program. If athletes or parents have concerns, they are encouraged to address them respectfully and constructively with the coaching staff.

Coaches must demonstrate strong leadership by upholding group standards, fostering a positive atmosphere where athletes feel secure in their development and well-being. Team success is built on intensity, enthusiasm, and composure. Not all athletes will receive equal playing time, but everyone will have opportunities to grow and contribute to the team’s overall success.
