My name is Joe Gabent, and I have been teaching 4^th and 5^th grades here at Fairwood Explorer Elementary since 2009. I earned my undergraduate degree in History from the University of California in Santa Cruz in 2008, followed by my Masters Degree in Education in 2009, also from UCSC. During my time in Sunnyvale School District, I have served on several leadership committees, including Language Arts, Science, and Technology, and have been on Fairwood's leadership team since 2012. I am very interested in scientific inquiry, engineering design, and technology in the classroom, and keep my interests current through professional connections with the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose and the BaySci Champions program at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. I have also been involved as both an appraiser and a coach with Destination Imagination, an organization/competition that poses a set of project-based challenges that student teams must solve using critical thinking, engineering design, and creativity.
