Homework will be assigned on Monday through Thursday nights, though long-term may extend into work on the weekends. Students have a Planner that they write their homework down on every day. This planner should be checked and signed by you every night. It counts as a homework assignment. Written homework should not take more than 30 minutes each night. The 20 minutes of reading is independent of the written homework and may be done at different times throughout the week.
Here is a list of the typical homework assignments and how often your child should have them:
- Spelling- every night
- Reading Skills – every night
- Math- every night
- Reading Log- 20 minutes each night for about 400 min. for the month
- Homework Sheet or Planner- every night
- Social Studies/Science- as we do them
- Writing- about once a week
- Non-Fiction Comprehension- about once a week
- Progress Reports and Tests- must be returned the day after I hand them out (usually Tuesday)
Homework is checked every day on a Homework Sheet. I keep track of what is missing throughout the week. If a student is missing a homework assignment, they will make it up during recess that day. I will let you know what was missing for the week on their bimonthly progress report. Missing homework will affect effort scores on their report card.
- The Intent of Homework
- Helps build responsibility in the student as they are responsible for the completion and transportation of the work.
- Gives the student an opportunity to practice skills taught in class.
- Gives you a chance to be involved with your child’s class work.
