SUNNYVALE, CA – JANUARY 25, 2022 – The Sunnyvale School District Board of Education has completed the mapping process for its new trustee area boundaries.
The SSD Board of Education began the process of transitioning from at-large to by-trustee area elections on September 2, 2021. The board held five public hearings and one community forum to discuss the first, second, and third drafts of trustee-area maps.
At its January 20, 2022 meeting, the Sunnyvale School District Board of Education approved its new trustee area boundaries. The final approval will come from the Santa Clara County Committee on School District Organization in February.
Professional demographers from Cooperative Strategies, LLC, assisted and provided expertise throughout the mapping process. The new trustee boundary lines will be effective immediately once approved by the County Committee.
Once the map is approved by the county, Board elections will be transitioned to by-trustee area elections beginning with the 2022 election. Beginning in 2022, voters will only be able to vote for one Board member who resides in the trustee area in which they live.
When Census data is released every 10 years, school district trustee area boundaries are re-evaluated and necessary adjustments are made to balance population and meet other state and federal criteria.
The map of the five areas was adjusted to balance the population, based on 2020 U.S. Census data. The 2020 Census Data was released on August 12, 2021.
