Sunnyvale School District Receives ‘AAA’ Rating on District Bonds

SUNNYVALE, CA — June 9, 2023 —As part of a bond issuance process, Standard & Poor’s affirmed the Sunnyvale School District’s (SSD) bond ratings of ‘AAA’ – the highest rating possible from the rating agency.

A Triple-A (AAA) bond rating is the highest rating that bond agencies award to an investment that is considered to have a low risk of default, thereby making it the most creditworthy.

Triple-A (AAA) rated bonds are deemed least likely to default. In return for this safety, the bonds return the lowest interest rate. Bond rating agencies consider a company's balance sheet and many other factors, such as the District’s extremely strong tax base and solid management policies and practices. The rating also reflects the additional revenues from community support in the form of parcel taxes and through the Sunnyvale Education Foundation.

Sunnyvale School District voters approved Measure GG, a $100 million school bond measure, in November of 2018. Measure GG provides funds to renovate older schools, improve structural technology, and increase campus safety and security.

School districts typically break up a bond authorization into multiple series of bonds to match their project needs. SSD issued the first portion, “2018 Series A,” on November 17, 2021. That amount was $30 million.

After that portion was spent on projects throughout the district, SSD successfully issued the second series of bonds from the District’s 2018 Measure GG authorization (“2018 Series B Bonds”) on May 10, 2023.

The 2018 Series B Bonds is also about $30 million. It will be used to build new classrooms to replace aging and deteriorating portable classrooms, increase campus safety and security, replace old heating, plumbing and ventilating systems with energy-efficient systems, and upgrade computers and network infrastructure to provide students with better access to classroom technology.
