SSD gets READ-y for 2023 Authors Week
Three authors to visit all 10 schools with focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion
SUNNYVALE, CA — October 2-6, 2023 — Three prolific children’s and young adult authors will be visiting all 10 schools in the Sunnyvale School District (SSD) during the first week of October for the second annual Authors Week.
To get ready, the District will be distributing more than 2,500 copies of their books so that students will get the chance to read and discuss with the authors themselves!
“Authors Week is about showing our students that real people can be authors, that everyone has a story to tell, and that reading and writing can be linked to a real person in a real profession,” said District Librarian Rachel Bross who coordinated the event.
A District initiative is to ensure that the books our students read and have access to introduce them to new experiences or have their experiences reflected in the reading.
One of the highlights for students at this event last year was also being able to get the visiting author’s autograph in their very own book.
“I liked that she got to sign our books,” shared one student. “I finally have a book signed by its own author!”
Visiting authors include:
- Yuyi Morales-- known for her books Dreamers, Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book, Little Night, and Viva Frida, which received the 2015 Pura Belpre Medal for illustration as well as a 2015 Caldecott Honor.
- Jerry Craft -- New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of the graphic novels New Kid, winner of the John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature (2020), the Kirkus Prize for Young Readers’ Literature (2019), and the Coretta Scott King Author Award for the most outstanding work by an African American writer (2020).
