SUNNYVALE, CA — July 1, 2024 — We are fortunate to be in a community that supports the work we do and our mission to provide our students, staff, and community with the most optimal learning environments that we can. Each summer we take on multiple projects while the students are away and this summer, like others, is extremely busy. Below you will find an overview of our departments projects and we look forward to completing these before our staff and students return in August.

Summer Slurry Projects: To extend the life of our asphalt surfaces, we are performing slurry seal maintenance on our campuses. This year, we're introducing a color slurry option designed to reduce the temperature of asphalt play surfaces, making them cooler and more enjoyable for our students.

Digital Marquees Installation: We are installing digital marquees at the remaining campuses across the district. These marquees will enhance communication efficiency, ensuring our school communities stay well-informed and connected.

Ellis Elementary Modernization: The four-year modernization project at Ellis Elementary is nearing completion. We are thrilled to welcome our students back to a beautifully updated campus at the end of the summer.

Sunnyvale Middle School 2-Story Campus Project: The modernization of Sunnyvale Middle School is underway with the construction of a new two-story classroom building. Blach Construction has already demolished select portables, and the project will continue throughout the school year. Upon completion, this project will provide a state-of-the-art learning environment for SMS students and staff.

Custodial Team Efforts: Our custodial team hit the ground running and is diligently cleaning each one of our campuses within a very tight timeframe. We understand that our students and staff are able to learn and educate better and are more engaged when our campuses are clean and well maintained, and our team does a great job.  Some of their work at all 10 Sunnyvale School District Schools covers:

• Classrooms: 542,000 square feet.
• Libraries: 46,000 square feet.
• Multi-Purpose/Kitchen: 87,609 square feet.
• Restrooms: 31,400 square feet.
• Grand Total: +700,000 square feet.

Maintenance Team Activities: While students are away, our Maintenance Team is busy with preventative maintenance tasks, including HVAC filter replacements, equipment tune-ups, and the replacement of old units. This ensures our facilities are in top condition for the new school year.

Transportation Department Update: Our Transportation Department is receiving two new electric buses this summer. This addition will bring our fleet to 75% electric, with 100% of our fleet using clean fueling sources.

We have a great team here in Sunnyvale and we understand and value the work that we do for our students. The Operations Department is proud to play an important role in the educational experience!
